What's the magical green glow that dominates the sky in this pic of ESO’s La Silla Observatory in #Chile? 🧐

Known as airglow, it's a faint light emitted by the Earth’s atmosphere and it is only visible in the darkest of places. The green glow here is caused by oxygen atoms, but it can also be red or yellow, depending on the type of atoms or molecules that cause them.

The ultra wide-angle image shows a distorted upward view of the night sky, as seen from the ground, with curved edges. The dark sky is dominated by a green glow, with some white smudges showing, and the white and purple Milky Way bulge stands at the centre. Towards the side the light gets more yellow. Three distorted-looking telescopes are at the edge of the image: a big, rounded, white building at the top left, a smaller white one on a brown rocky hill at the bottom, and a tiny grey one at the top.
