Thousands gather in #BangorME for "#HandsOff!" rally

by Cali Warren Apr 5, 2025

BANGOR -- "On Saturday, Bangor's waterfront was packed with thousands participating in an initiative called "Hands Off" - one of several protests happening all over the state and nation.

"'Hands off, it's a national mass mobilization so all over the world, all over the country, people are taking protests to the streets,' said organizer Amanda Roy.

"Protesters advocated against cuts to healthcare and government offices, and rallied for #equality and rights for #PeopleOfColor, #immigrants and the #LGBTQ+ community.

"You name it, we're facing critical cuts, veterans and their benefits, federal employees, everything. This isn't the America that I want to live in," Roy stated.

"'I think a lot of people are here because, hands off of our #SocialSecurity, hands off of our #Medicaid, hands off our #healthcare, hands off our #HumanRights, our #CivilRights,' explained rally volunteer Deborah Lee.

"Elected officials say it's important to hear Mainer's voices at these large-scale protests.

"'We don't have billions or millions here in Maine, we're just regular Mainers speaking up, but we the people do have the power to make change and to stand up for our communities and to help each other,' explained Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who attended the rally as a guest speaker.

"'What a time to be alive, we are all living in history...I honestly would not choose to be in another time than this one right here. I feel so incredibly moved to just exist right now, in this moment where I see such energy, such #resistance, such camaraderie,' said Bangor City Council Member Joseph Leonard."

#Postal workers rally against proposals to privatize #USPS

Maine Public | By Kaitlyn Budion
Published March 20, 2025

"Postal workers across #Maine are sounding alarms about proposals to privatize the U.S. Postal Service.

"Workers in #PortlandME and #BangorME rallied today to make the case that private companies will not be able to fully meet the mail service needs of Maine residents- especially those in rural areas.

"In Bangor, protestors chanted 'U.S. mail is not for sale' and held signs as passing cars honked in support.

"Tom Smith is the legislative director with the local chapter of the American Postal Workers Union. He said shifting mail delivery to private companies would only make it more expensive to send and slower to arrive.

"'It becomes a for-profit business where the bottom line is profits, as long as people can suffer a couple of days without their meds, as long as the bottom dollar is found,' Smith said. 'And that's not what we are. We are an essential service of the United States people.'

"Smith said workers are on edge with all the debate in Washington, and #InstitutionalKnowledge is being lost as some long-time staff take early retirement offers.

"'The Postal Service is inexpensive, it's prompt, it's reliable,' he said. "And especially in rural areas, people count on the Postal Service for life saving meds to Grandma's latest batch of snickerdoodles.'

"Smith said the union is encouraging the public to reach out to local and federal representatives to show their support. The National Association of Letter Carriers will also hold a rally in Portland on Sunday."

#Maine: #HoultonME rally against #Trump administration was one of 16 in Maine

by Kathleen Phalen Tomaselli, March 3, 2025

HOULTON, Maine — "Fifty-two people stood together in the rain on Saturday afternoon in downtown Houlton, wearing black armbands and carrying signs calling for the restoration of the nation.

"The rally was one of more than a dozen around the state on Saturday against the new administration of President Donald #Trump. Co-organizer Marilyn Roper said it was meant to draw attention to what demonstrators see as the recent loss of so many of the nation’s rights and the dismantling of government agencies. They also urged support for #Ukraine in its war against #Russia.

"Also over the weekend, demonstrators gathered at the State House in Augusta to protest the Maine Principal’s Association’s rules allowing transgender student athletes to participate in sports divisions that align with their actual gender, which have sparked the ongoing threats by the Trump administration to cut Maine’s federal funding.

"As the group of Houlton-area residents stood in silence displaying messages of restoration, passing drivers honked in solidarity. They specifically called for the restoration of law and order, decency, democracy, and the U.S. Agency for International Development [#USAID], among other things.

"During one stretch of time, the only vocal opposition came from a man driving a black pick-up truck, who yelled his disapproval out the window as he drove by.

"Roper is part of a statewide peace and justice group that co-organized the March 1 rallies in 16 communities, with one each in every Maine county. Some of the other demonstrations were in #BangorME, #SkowheganME, #CalaisME, #Damariscotta and #PortlandME.

"Several participating in the Houlton rally expressed their disgust and shame regarding Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance’s berating of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office on Friday.

"Others bemoaned what they see as so many losses since the January inauguration.

"Houlton resident Bertrand Laurence said that even people who choose to not be involved are making a political statement.

"A core group of local organizers has been meeting regularly over the years to plan this and other activities related to issues of #SocialJustice and democracy.

"Following Saturday’s one-hour rally, organizers met at the #UnitarianUniversalist Church to plan future actions, including an upcoming postcard mailing campaign to the White House, said Roper.

"The postcards, slated for a March 15 mailing, will be addressed directly to Trump as a public expression of opposition to his behaviors and policies.

"'May the rallies in Maine and across the country bring about some halt in the destruction of our democracy and restoration of so much lost,' Roper said."
