This is an editorial in the New Zealand Medical Journal, reprinted in The Lancet. Both versions are paywalled. If it helps, here's the Lancet copy.

"Authoritarian regimes elsewhere see the USA as setting a precedent, finding in Trump’s agenda a justification to suppress dissent, censor scientific dialogue, and delegitimise independent inquiry…Scientific research, especially in medicine and public health, is inherently intertwined with social justice. Silencing DEI initiatives, censoring climate science, and delegitimising minority researchers is not neutrality—it is complicity in perpetuating harm. Resistance is not without precedent…Whistleblowers, journal editors, and advocacy organisations have long served as guardians of scientific freedom. Today, that tradition must continue with renewed vigour. Editorial boards must uphold their independence. Universities and scientific bodies must defend faculty facing retribution. Policy makers must embed protections for scientific freedom into the legislative framework."
"Archivists Recreate Pre-Trump #CDC Website, Are Hosting It in Europe."

"A team of volunteer archivists has recreated the Centers for Disease Control website exactly as it was the day Donald Trump was inaugurated. The site, called RestoredCDC.org, went live Tuesday and is currently being hosted in Europe…Restored CDC isn’t going to have continuous updates on this type of healthcare and disease guidance, but it has brought back all of the critical data that was purged in an easy to use, easy to navigate, and fast website."
Here's the site itself.

"E.P.A. Says It Will Eliminate Its Scientific Research Arm."
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/18/climate/epa-firings-scientific-research.html
"The Environmental Protection Agency [#EPA] said on Friday that it would eliminate its scientific research arm and begin firing hundreds of chemists, biologists, toxicologists and other scientists, after denying for months that it intended to do so."

"Weather forecasting and the research that supports it…are what economists call “public goods.” That is, they’re things provided by the government because they’re valuable to everyone but can’t easily be monetized, because there’s no good way to limit access to paying customers. I say no 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 way advisedly. Republicans have long sought to restrict access to National Weather Service data to private companies like AccuWeather, which in turn would provide forecasts only to paying customers. And they may succeed. But this would be obvious profiteering, creating artificial middlemen for access to information generated at taxpayer expense. And it would at best support forecasting, not the research that makes forecasting better."

"Data manipulation within the US Federal Government."
https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(25)01249-8/fulltext
"A US Department of Veterans Affairs dataset compiling veteran health-care use in 2021 was quietly amended on March 5, 2025. A column titled #gender was renamed #sex, and the words were also switched in the dataset title and description…Before March 5, the dataset had not been modified since it was published in 2022. As of May 1, the dataset change log, in which modifications should be tracked, is empty. The switch from gender to sex also occurred in other public health datasets, including US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (#CDC) datasets tracking global adult tobacco consumption, stroke mortality data from 2015 to 2017, and a survey of nutrition, physical activity, and obesity…The agencies involved have not issued any statements confirming or explaining these changes."
PS: If these agencies think the label change ("gender" → "sex") is significant, then they are deliberately misrepresenting the data. If they think the terms are synonymous, then why are they bothering?
"Trump administration says it won’t publish major climate change reports on #NASA website as promised."
https://apnews.com/article/climate-change-nasa-reports-trump-hidden-doc-1ade1eb89bb4785f7cdd6e1d6ba31a21
"Earlier this month, the official government websites that hosted the authoritative, peer-reviewed national #climate assessments went dark…At the time, the White House said NASA would house the reports to comply with a 1990 law that requires the reports, which the space agency said it planned to do. But on Monday, NASA announced that it aborted those plans."
While the #Trump admin has not revoked or weakened the #OSTP #NelsonMemo, and the #NIH even accelerated its effective date, the #Republican led House Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science is trying to defund its implementation. #SPARC just released an open letter asking the committee to change course.

"I am writing to respectfully urge you to strike Section 550 from the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill, which would prohibit funding to implement the Office of Science and Technology Policy's August 25, 2022, memorandum ensuring free, immediate access to federally funded research…Rather than blocking #OpenAccess requirements, we should focus on addressing legitimate concerns about cost structures - including publication expenses - to ensure that access to publicly funded research is available while protecting taxpayers from unreasonable costs."
