My new #hamradio project:

Icom IC-718 in good shape other than smelling like ashtray, intended as "beater" base station for garage and outdoors, “up on the blocks" airing out

This thing is built like a tank and will last forever, it's like a 1986 Volvo 240SL sedan with 780k miles on it and not a spot of rust

Power output is 72W key down with about 12A power draw on RTTY, adjusting R1707 doesn't move the needle up. I will slowly work my way through the service manual as time and life permit

It has the UT-106 DSP in it, which is adorable, in its own little "cooler bag" shielding

The person who wrote the script for the net reminders (okay, it was me) must have had an off by one error in their code somewhere, because tonight is the monthly, hosted, club net!

Tonight we'll do it the same way we did last month - when folx check in we'll keep them on the list and will do multiple rounds of "random questions" - people can feel free to hang around for as many or as few rounds as they like!

NARS - Narwhal Amateur Radio Society, NR7WLNetsThe Narwhal Amateur Radio Society (NARS) is an amateur radio club not tied to a particular geographic region, with membership open both to licensed amateur radio operators and those who have not yet chosen to pursue such a license. We diversify the field and practice of amateur radio and RF experimentation, and foster joy, goodwill, understanding, and experiential enlightenment of all people in radio, computer, electronic, and related disciplines.

...also the TNC apparently it has the optional HF board too

Been watching APRS traffic fly by, and tested transmit and that seems to work too

If using a 40 something year old Commodore 64, with a similar age TNC, might as well add a vintage VHF radio from that period 😊

@Margaritak Amateur radio aka #hamradio is a hobby radio activity where the operators learn electronics theory, radio law and are tested to obtain a licence to transmit over the air. The weekly on-air meeting is known as a 'net,' short for 'network,' during which the net control operator (moi) coordinates the meeting so that everyone gets a turn speaking to other participants.

oho. An unlicensed person who does not know the ITU phonetic alphabet is whining about being unable to understand my calling of participant #hamradio stations.

Because this is important information that he needs to know.

This is a job for Captain Pedantic,
correcter of the most insignificant wrongs, ready to rap the knuckles of the whiniest of Little Bitches with an oaken 12 inch ruler.

I am the control operator for a weekly on-air roundtable meeting for my local #hamradio club. I call for stations wishing to participate, create a list, then call them in rotation for their turn to speak. I use the ITU standard phonetic alphabet when calling stations.

A shortwave listener (SWL), who is an unlicensed person who can not transmit, rather just listens to things as they find them, wrote an email to the club president complaining about being unable to comprehend the callsigns.
