That’s my deadline. That’s MORE THAN FAIR amount of time for them to:</p><p>1) Have a proper outline of the project and exactly what it will be.<br>2. Have a solid opt-in to the project, so no users are auto opted in without their consent<br>3. Have added account deletion options from an over-year-old feature request to add ways to delete including without removing ID’s for others along with anonymization. If data loss is really such a problem to them (which I think it should be) not having a way to do such a type of delete should be TOP PRIORITY especially with all this genAI bs going on...already it sounds like some power users have fully deleted their accounts over this, tired of waiting.</p><p>- Signed, someone with almost 25k ID’s for others, and almost 4k observations, including some firsts on the site (including new species to science) and other rare reports.</p><p>Please boost because I don't think most users know what is going on. All this info is mostly occurring on their separate forum, which you need to make a separate account to join. mnl mnl mnl mnl mnl<p>current llm-based tools are way more than "stochastic parrots", even if one decides that a transformer model does "just copying text pattern out of its training corpus" (there's a fair amount of research into if that's the case or not).</p><p>they often incorporate search (either web search, or using a specific set of documents as grounding), doing maths, interacting with APIs, or really just executing programs (which would include all the preceding tools) and more importantly "writing" programs.</p><p>Imagine I have a bug where I want to find out why a certain write seems to happen before a read and lead to a race condition. If the LLM-based agent generates a eBPF program, runs it, writes a full log, matches those writes and reads to the original source, looks up the API definitions and writes a report on why these APIs shouldn't be used together, I legitimately don't care how and why these tools and reports and information were put together. Both on a theorical level and on a practical empirical level, they don't really differ from what a colleague would create and how I would use it, except for the fact that it has certain quirks that I've become comfortable recognizing and addressing.</p><p>I have no problem saying that this LLM agent's work above (eBPF, realtime webUI, logging, analysis, search, final report) is in every single point better and more rigorous than what I would have done. For a while so called "reasoning" was hyped as a solution to improve #LLM results, but it turned out the output gets worse the longer the models "think":

That's of course because the models do not "think" but give statistic outputs based on the input (context). The more context there is, the higher the probability that something irrelevant influences the output. No thinking involved. It's no intelligence, not even an artificial one. It's statistics.

So it’s been over a month since iNaturalist first announced using Google's genAI…
…I signed up for the q&a they were going to do, and have not heard one thing. There is also no updates other than a forum post from iNat staff saying they hope to have a working prototype at the end of the year.

I don’t want a “prototype at the end of the year" released and then have it be too late to retract what I have given to the site so it doesn’t get eaten up by a genAI machine. If there is a working demo, that means the data’s already been fed, I would think…?

Thus, at this point, it’s just how long do I wait until I pull the plug? Because there is a total lack of transparency, a lot of double talking, and this is far too big an issue to just leave to chance. And for everyone saying “but science!” we functioned as scientists far before iNat existed, and there are other ways to manage datasets. If you are that conditioned to needing a computer to think for you, maybe rethink being a scientist.

iNat has done great things, getting into bed with genAI is not one of them; instead it is a nail in the coffin of science, thinking, and reason.
