"All this violence and torture is not a failure of the system... This is the system."
Candida Lobes from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) criticised European migration policies for enabling a system of abuse in Libya. During an interview on MEE Live, she described the widespread torture, extortion, and exploitation of migrants in Libyan detention centres not as an accidental failure, but as a direct result of political choices made by European governments.
Lobes highlighted how agreements between countries like Italy and Libyan authorities, particularly the support and funding of the Libyan coast guard, have led to thousands of migrants being intercepted at sea and forcibly returned to Libya. There, many face systemic abuse in facilities that are well-documented by humanitarian organisations."

A new report by MSF provides evidence of "systemic torture along refugee routes from Africa into Europe".
In an interview on MEE Live, Somali-Irish refugee activist Ifrah Ahmad recounted the brutal realities faced by migrants smuggled through Libya. Ahmad spoke of women who became pregnant from rape, were severely beaten, and in some cases left to die. She described meeting a young woman held in a house for three months, forced into domestic and sexual servitude and abandoned when she became unwell."
