"don't use too much tongue"

and

"a paper plate with two chickens"

are the sort of non-canonical countability shifts I analyze in this just now published paper. I argue for a wide range of contextually enabled shifting operations in "Shifting interpretations: Count and mass in linguistic categorization" journals.openedition.org/lexis

This long article on the passive is very much worth a read as there is some confusion about what a passive exactly is.

languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/

* The passive is not an undesirable feature limited to bad writing; it's a useful construction often needed for clear expression, and every good writer uses it.
* The passive does not always involve a use of be.
* The passive does not always involve masking the identity of the agent—it can be used to put the spotlight on the agent.
