It's WORKING!
The first of the American healthcare workers to move to #Nanaimo have landed — a nurse who'll be starting at NRGH in a few days. Another comes in a couple of weeks, and more confirmed in the coming months.

New section added!

If you know anyone up-island who might love to #sing with others for the joy of it in #Nanaimo or #Parksville, Sylvia hosts informal #SongCircles with uplifting, harmony-rich songs taught by ear, with lots of creativity and movement, and sometimes collaborations with visiting songleaders. She's from the #UbuntuChoirsNetwork - who believe singing is a universal human birthright! It's all about #harmony and #connection rather than perfection.

ok. this was a weird moment. I just handed in my landline work phone. ☎️

Last winter we had a bad storm in #Nanaimo and it caused some power outages and spikes at VIU. At some point it damaged some very aged and critical parts of our internal telecom system.

Ever since, the plan to
move to fully digital comms (using Teams) has been quickly progressing.

The migration is done now. My phone still worked immediately after the storm, but it's been dead air for a few months now. Mine is the first in the building to go into "the box" which just appeared in the office. 😢 ✌️

Goodbye Faithful Northern Telecom phone.

I won't miss your answering service but my fingers will never forget the passcode. 😂

Wildfire Smoke Sunset

On most evenings, the sunset shadows on my window blinds look like this:

This evening, though, they looked like this:

There is a wildfire growing near Cameron Lake, about 60 km (37 miles) to the north of where I live. Properties near the fire are on evacuation alert, but I haven’t read or heard much about the progress of the fire in recent hours.

As I settled in for the evening I noticed that the sunset was a lot more orange than usual, and I am assuming it is because of the smoke from the wildfire. There are lots of them in British Columbia at the moment, and this morning there were 134, up from 61 yesterday. Most of them have been caused by lightning strikes but some are caused by human activity. It has been very hot and dry recently, so the least spark can cause a wildfire.

While I continue to be concerned about the fires and the people who live near them, I am also fascinated by the unusual colours in the sky.

Sway-a-Lana Lagoon

Sway-a-Lana Lagoon is a swimming pool within Maffeo Sutton Park in Nanaimo. I often see families on the beach here and occasionally swimmers in the Lagoon. It is a lovely spot surrounded by well-tended gardens and bordered by a pedestrian bridge. From there you can see Protection Island and Saysutshun.

“Sway-a-Lana” refers to a historical figure, the eldest son of the first man in Nanaimo. The name is derived from the Snuneymuxw First Nation and is associated with the area’s natural and cultural significance. The Snuneymuxw First Nation consider the area around Maffeo Sutton Park a sacred site and a place of ongoing connection to the land.

@Texan_Reverend I will go ahead & make an early prediction that this newer #covid variant will hit #Nanaimo area on Vancouver Island the hardest - in this area of the world. That city & surrounding nearby communities is full of anti science Conservatives, antivaxxers, antimaskers & lately, it's had the most infections on the whole island, according to recent wastewater data. Nanaimo is also a port city & it has a lot of international Asian students & many new Asian entrepreneurs who fly there often.
It will hit #Comox area too for similar reasons(except it doesn't have high Asian population or as many Asian tourists/business people) as Nanaimo. Then #VictoriaBC will see a lot of cases from majority of folks not masking anymore.

"A #StepCode basically gives the municipality control over like how ambitious are they going to be according to what level they choose to implement. #Nanaimo was deliberating over whether they were going to fast forward the implementation of the zero carbon step code & go right to the top tier."

Today, a nurse from Texas who visited Nanaimo because of the Infusion event, accepted a job here in #Nanaimo and is moving in a few months.

Her wife, who is also a nurse, is following shortly after.

Doctors, OTs, and others are also moving here. I couldn’t have even dreamed this would happen 🙂❤️
