Riddle-Poem 7/22/2025

I struck the ground, and there upsprung
The source of every song that’s sung
By poets, bards and balladeers.
My most familiar form appears
With forelegs raised and wings addorsed,
But for uncounted years I’ve coursed
Across the depths of upper air
In the shape of a perfect square.

“It’s impossible not to love the world more when reading Burnside, and impossible not to be more scared and saddened while doing so. He was the ideal laureate of our age, painfully alive to the glory of what we’re losing.”

—Sarah Crown reviews John Burnside’s posthumously published final poetry collection THE EMPIRE OF FORGETTING

ODE TO THE PUNK PUSSIES WHO CRASHED A KID'S PICNIC AT MACARTHUR PARK

The war birds keep circling overhead
As Democracy circles down the drain
Theater in the park, but Shakespeare's dead
So clowns sing "If I Only Had A Brain"

Chicken hawks squawk on the idiot box
A pox on the yellow-bellied red necks
Their hearts full of stone and heads full of rocks
Watching Whiskey Pete handling opsec
