Thank you for the 12 quotes at the end. e.g. “Even wholesome things can become a distraction if you make them take the place of your sheer presence to life.”

You, with galaxies
Behind your eyes,
Can see in the dark.
I am still here
Despite the times
I’ve disappeared
Completely.
Out of darkness
The light borne
Wonder of beginning
Again.

LONELY ARCH IN MOONLIGHT
in the belly of this
little vessel, the shelter
of night, I have nothing on my shoulders
Riddle-Poem 7/22/2025
I struck the ground, and there upsprung
The source of every song that’s sung
By poets, bards and balladeers.
My most familiar form appears
With forelegs raised and wings addorsed,
But for uncounted years I’ve coursed
Across the depths of upper air
In the shape of a perfect square.

or rather such occasions
render brothers asunder:
yes, the sister was
so much stronger."

“It’s impossible not to love the world more when reading Burnside, and impossible not to be more scared and saddened while doing so. He was the ideal laureate of our age, painfully alive to the glory of what we’re losing.”
—Sarah Crown reviews John Burnside’s posthumously published final poetry collection THE EMPIRE OF FORGETTING
"This stone [in Lancashire, UK], commemorates the lives of James Jones and his two wives, Sarah and Sadie.
"Which of them earned this epithet, and how, is not clear."
I'd say everyone earns it. Doesn't take very many years, either...

If MacArthur were here you'd quake in fear
Do your so-called soldiers feel like heroes
Or kids playing dress up in army gear
Chumps getting trumped by a bunch of zeroes
Not one of you knows a thing about pride
But you're more than well-versed in genocide
ODE TO THE PUNK PUSSIES WHO CRASHED A KID'S PICNIC AT MACARTHUR PARK
The war birds keep circling overhead
As Democracy circles down the drain
Theater in the park, but Shakespeare's dead
So clowns sing "If I Only Had A Brain"
Chicken hawks squawk on the idiot box
A pox on the yellow-bellied red necks
Their hearts full of stone and heads full of rocks
Watching Whiskey Pete handling opsec

I will
Greet death
Like I do
The twilight,
By looking
For the stars.
