I finally came around to writing up the details behind the CSS-only code listings I use on my blog. These listings wrap on page resize with line continuation markers, show scrollbars past a configurable minimum width, support native text selection without the line numbers being copied, and number lines in plain CSS without any JS involved. Have a look, the post is simultaneously a demo:

Oh FFS

I put in ONE WORD that's not English and you switch my whole interface to whatever country the word I put in is from.

How about ASKING ME!!

#UI FAIL.

This is happening more lately... 🤬

This thing gave me so much grief! 😭

The rings with their masking, the shadow with its transform, the click detection... Did you know you cannot undo the skew transform? I think... I hope... 'Cause that's the conclusion that I'm making after half a dozen hours on this problem.

Husband @jbqueru tried KDE again, hated it again. I tried to fix his issue for him, only to find more bad design decisions along the way (added a greek input & lost my US english when I switched to it, because it didn't auto-add it).

KDE is just badly designed. No UI designer person was ever allowed to put their foot down to a developer and tell them how to do things. That's what KDE needs, and it's the same story since 1996. It's just clunky. Yuck.

What’s wrong with these viral typography tips?

I keep seeing posts that show 4 fonts, each with a recommended letter spacing. I get it, it’s a popular format that drives engagement. But as a type designer, I can tell you: following this kind of advice blindly can actually hurt your typography.

Below are 4 strategies for setting letter spacing that will help improve your design work.

Things I'm digging with Mastodon 4.4:

- The ability to zoom in on media. Smooth and elegant

- The language button in the "write" box that lights up in yellow when another language has been automatically detected (I usually write in English or in French and regularly set it wrong first and have to edit the post - as I did on this one, for example)

- The audio controls

- The revamped mobile interface, though I probably won't use it much.

Kudos to the @Mastodon team!

Getting so freaking tired of mystery-meat toggle switches in #UI design.

The button says "kill all puppies."
Does clicking the button kill all puppies, or are all puppies being killed right now, and you desperately need to click the button to stop the puppy slaughter?

There is no way to know, because clicking the button just changes it to say "Stop killing puppies."

* Runs into the street, screaming

Just make it a checkbox, you absolute station wagons.
