Happy Space Science Saturday! Did you know that today Saturn begins its retrograde motion? Normally, Saturn moves eastward against the background of stars, but during retrograde it appears to pivot and move westward through the constellations. This apparent backward motion isn’t because Saturn actually reverses its orbit, but rather because of Earth’s own motion around the Sun. As Earth passes Saturn in its orbit, our changing perspective makes Saturn appear to move backward in the night sky.

Happy Space Science Saturday!
Tonight, Venus reaches its greatest western elongation, meaning it is at its furthest point from the Sun in the sky, about 46 degrees. This is an ideal time to observe the planet because it will be at its highest point above the horizon before sunrise. So, get out your telescopes and have a good time stargazing!

Happy Space Science Saturday!
The New Moon will be upon us May 27th so get your telescopes ready! This phase provides ideal conditions for observing faint objects in the night sky. During a New Moon, the Moon is positioned between the Sun and Earth, meaning very little sunlight is reflected off its surface, giving us darker skies for optimal stargazing.

Join us for Doors Open Toronto!
Visitors to the observatory will have an opportunity to view our 1-metre and 60-centimetre telescopes, speak with astronomy students, learn what it means to be an astronomer, find out about the latest research and discoveries. There will be guided tours of the building, along with a special Observatory Treasure Hunt.
Smaller portable telescopes will be available for visitor use, weather permitting.

Who doesn't love space? It captures our imaginations and makes us wonder if we are truly alone. This is a great Doors Open option for young visitors and the young at heart.

Visitors should note that there are dim light conditions and stairs-only access (unfortunately no lifts or ramps are available) in the observatory and sturdy close-toed shoes are recommended.
Last admittance will be at 4:30 PM ET.
To learn more, check out the observatory website: https://www.yorku.ca/science/observatory/
