A mass of Canadian forest wildfire smoke has been making its way across the Atlantic for the past two or three days.

It's now reached the UK and may well be detectable, as it has been on earlier occasions, this evening. Look for probably quite weak trails high in the sky from around an hour or so before sunset/sunrise and also note if the sunset is unusually reddened.

"#SpaceX just conducted a giant uncontrolled experiment in atmospheric #chemistry. Earlier this year, analysts noticed something strange: #Starlink #satellites were falling out of the sky--a lot of them. What’s going on? In short: routine housecleaning. What’s not usual is the atmospheric fallout."

Hidden cozied up to #Betelgeuse, a bright red #star in the constellation Orion, astronomers may have finally found the giant star’s long-sought companion.

This close-orbiting partner, first postulated over a century ago, matches some predictions and adds another piece to the puzzle of the mysterious supergiant star.

The companion appears to orbit the supergiant at a distance just four times that between Earth and the sun, putting the companion within Betelgeuse’s expansive outer #atmosphere.

We now have a good idea about the makeup of #Uranus#atmosphere
20 years of observations have given us more knowledge about the icy giant.
According to the research, which assessed Hubble images taken between 2002 and 2022, the main components of Uranus’ atmosphere are hydrogen and helium, with a small amount of methane and very small amounts of water and ammonia. Uranus appears pale blue-green because methane absorbs the red component of sunlight.
