@afewbugs Just a guess: the noisy-baby syndrome evolved after humans were living in social groups sufficiently large and organized enough to defend against predators.
If predators can be held off, a baby able to communicate about hunger, pain, and other needs would (I think) be better able to survive than babies who did not communicate needs (cf. baby birds, who clearly signal desire to be fed).
Also, calming a crying infant might strengthen parental bonds.

Several activists told Middle East Eye that they had intensified their campaign to end what they called South Africa’s complicity in Israel’s war on Gaza, where more than 200,000 Palestinians have been killed or wounded and the entire population is facing famine.
Zukiswa Wanner, a writer and activist, said that many South Africans had thought Pretoria’s decision to take Israel to the International Court of Justice in late 2023 would result in a swift end to the 22-month conflict, but Israel, with full Western backing, continued its war on the enclave.

Between songs, a member of the group addressed the crowd, acknowledging the contrast between performing music and speaking about such a serious issue. He said the war in Gaza did not begin on 7 October, and drew parallels between what is happening in Palestine and Ireland’s own colonial past under British rule.
The band described how, at the start of the war, Palestinians were being bombed from the air. Now, they said, people are being shot while collecting aid and starved to death. They praised young people in Ireland, Poland and around the world for recognising what is happening and refusing to stay silent, vowing to continue using their platform to speak out
