Being As I live in a regional hub town in a rural area of the US with bad roads, no money to fix them, and a culture that is almost entirely car-dependent, I have never once been pleasantly surprised by the behavior of motor vehicle operators.I've been assaulted, had things thrown at me from fast moving vehicles, I have had school buses and other drivers recklessly attempt to pass me on the street coming within less than a handsbreath of killing me.

All of my roles in our municipal government are new for me this year. I am also a member of our Capital Grants Review Committee.The bicycle infrastructure in our town—what little of it there is—is abysmal. I have been living here for 10 yrs and have been car-free for the past 4 of them.My fellow commissioners are pro-cycling and pro-urbanism, despite the fact that we are at heart a regional hub town in a rural area, though we do have an Amtrak station.

No surprises this week, though plenty of pleasant rides! I rode to my first meeting as Planning Commissioner, to a Selectboard meeting to discuss a bicycle infrastructure problem in my town, and to accomplish my grocery shopping.

My most local bike shop is just on the edge of my neighbourhood, so I drive past it a few times a week. It was going to close because the owner was retiring, and some of the employees purchased the business and moved to another location closer to my house and to mountain biking trails. I've wanted to attend more than I've been able to attend. I had tickets to Spezi this year and am bitterly disappointed I couldn't make it in time. moggieQ5. How did you discover your local bike shop? Do they advertise, or are they on a main street and you were just riding by? What attracted you to the shop in the first place?The shop I used for a long time seems to have stopped answering emails, etc. so I needed a new one. I searched for all the bike shops in San Francisco and took a close look at their websites. I was looking for some extensive modifications on a very unusual 15-year-old bike and I knew a lot of shops wouldn't do that kind of work.
