Alberta is known for beef - not sheep - but apparently 80% of the population in the riding Battle Creek - Crowfoot consist of them.
Poilievre no doubt now rushing to get out of his rented digs in Ottawa and back into Stornaway (on our dime) before the constituents even realize he’s MIA.
And will be for the next 4 years.

Yuan Yi Zhu ( @yuanyiz.bsky.social ): "On its face, section 107 gives the Minister unlimited powers to stop a labour dispute. But this reading is entirely at odds with the rest of the Canada Labour Code." | nitter
nitter.net/yuanyi_z/status/195

The thread (also at x.com/yuanyi_z/status/19575862 ) argues that the government cannot use s. 107 as it did in the cases of #AirCanada , #CanadaPost or of the port workers.

NitterYuan Yi Zhu (@yuanyi_z)On its face, section 107 gives the Minister unlimited powers to stop a labour dispute. But this reading is entirely at odds with the rest of the Canada Labour Code.

The Air Canada strike situation is an unmitigated disgrace.

First of all, getting no pay for mandatory work while the plane is on the ground is fucking insane, and it apparently being industry standard practice (which I had no idea of before today) makes it so much worse. Unions explicitly agreeing to it in the past doesn't make that any less true; I dearly hope those unions had damn good reasons at the time, because any union worth its salt would know that this is textbook wage theft, and sends the message that this type of labour is not valuable. A message that is, of course, a lie, because if it wasn't valuable it wouldn't be mandatory!

The other prong of this hellscape is that forcing people back to work should never be allowed, in any industry, in any context. Causing economic damage is precisely the purpose of strikes; that's what motivates the company to give the workers what they want. If the company is so big and central to the economy that a strike will significantly damage the entire economy, then that's not a reason to force people back to work; it's a reason to break up the company!

This is obvious but I need to say it. This is a strategically terrible time for a housing shortage.
If things keep sliding in the #US we are going to need millions of new homes for people coming to #Canada. People relocating to our country will make us harder to invade, but not if they're living in tents.
If this is the excuse we need for a federal medium-density standard, I'll take it. #canpol

#FirstNations Warn #Carney’s Push to Build #Canada Could Tear It Apart

The prime minister’s #FastTrack law has already set off a wave of #IndigenousProtest

by Joy Spearchief-Morris
Aug. 8, 2025

Excerpt: "The last time the federal government passed sweeping industry-friendly legislation without proper #Indigenous consultation, it triggered one of the largest grassroots political movements in Canadian history: #IdleNoMore. The movement was a direct response to the 2012 passage of the omnibus budget bill #C45, legislation that endangered #TraditionalLands and resources by reducing federal oversight on thousands of #waterways. Indigenous people across the country took part in Idle No More with widespread protests, including teach-ins, flash mobs, round dances, and blockades. Though the law remained in place, the movement showed that when governments legislate without meaningful Indigenous involvement, the consequences can be swift, sustained, and impossible to ignore.

"Yet, across Canada’s history, Indigenous people have been European settlers’ longest allies. Relations with French settlers led to the birth of the Metis people; First Nations played pivotal roles in British efforts during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. And many Indigenous people volunteered and fought as part of Canada’s contributions to the first and second world wars.

"Now, Canada faces new threats as the US president muses about making Canada an unwilling fifty-first state while launching a trade war on Canadian goods. But as history has proved, Canada cannot succeed in defending itself as a nation-state without acknowledging and partnering with #IndigenousNations."

Meanwhile in #Canada... #Saskatoon #CommunityGarden gets evicted

By Payton Zillich Global News
Posted August 6, 2025 8:07 pm

"On July 23, 2025, the Rotary Community Garden was given a 29-day eviction notice.

"The notice requested that the garden be completely removed by Aug. 21. According to the garden coordinators, the reason given for the eviction was to 'ensure efficiencies and cost savings' in site remediation.

"The garden, built in 2019, was the first vacant brownfield lot in Saskatoon to be transformed into community garden.

"On Wednesday, members of the Rotary Community Garden spoke to city council about the impact losing the garden would have, noting that produce from the garden cuts costs for #LowIncome or #HouselessIndividuals.

" 'Last summer we had one person who was not staying in the garden, (but) was staying in one of the #homeless shelters but came regularly and began gardening with us. (He) gardened on and off all summer and he has continued to correspond with us. He’s found housing, he’s in Prince Albert and he’s back on a stable path. He credits our support that summer with some of his success,' says Miki Mappin, a co-coordinator for the #RotaryCommunityGarden."

#Alberta Municipality Declares #FarmDisaster Due to #Drought, Approves Water-Guzzling #Data CentrePlan

Jody MacPherson, July 31, 2025

"An Alberta municipality that declared an agricultural disaster earlier this month due to drought is moving forward with plans to host the 'largest #AI computer data centre on Earth,' which could drain millions of litres of water every day from the watershed.

"The watershed is located in #Treaty8 territory and across the #MétisNation of #Alberta Regions 4, 5, and 6. Almost 175,000 people live along the 1,900 kilometers of rivers that flow north into the #NorthwestTerritories. The nearest #FirstNation to the project, #SturgeonLakeCreeNation, wrote an open 'cease and desist' letter to Alberta’s premier saying it learned of the project through the media.

"In response to emailed questions from The Energy Mix, the Municipal District of #Greenview said its approach on the $70-billion #WonderValley data centre project proposed by #CelebrityInvestor #KevinOLeary had not changed despite the unfolding disaster devastating livestock producers in the region.

" 'Every project in the Greenview Industrial Gateway, including Wonder Valley, must go through rigorous environmental and regulatory reviews, including water use approvals managed by the province,' according to an email statement from the municipality. 'Council continues to monitor drought impacts, and any decisions on industrial water use will balance environmental responsibility with economic opportunity.' [I CALL BULLSHIT!]

"Greenview declared the agricultural disaster due to the ongoing drought, aggravated by a #grasshopper invasion. 'We urge all levels of government and the public to understand the gravity of the situation and to support the #agricultural community through this difficult time,' the community said in a media release.
Our producers are the backbone of not only our local economy, but also Alberta’s and #Canada’s, and they need our full support now more than ever.' "

#SouthBruce staff to prepare report on second #NuclearWaste repository

As runners-up in the #NWMO's first site-selection process, the municipality of South Bruce is uniquely positioned as the organization now seeks a second site to bury nuclear waste deep underground.

Greg Cowan
Published Jul 28, 2025

Excerpt: "The proposed site faced significant public opposition, including from the Protecting Our Waterways – No Nuclear Waste group. Furthermore, the #SaugeenOjibwayNation, with its traditional territory stretching from the tip of the #BrucePeninsula to south of #Goderich, announced earlier this year that it plans to issue a #moratorium on future nuclear intensification and waste projects if no progress is made on addressing nuclear legacy issues in its territory.

" 'We will enforce this moratorium by all legal and political means necessary until a just and satisfactory resolution is in place,' the letter signed by #Nawash Chief #GregNadjiwon and #Saugeen Chief #ConradRitchie stated. 'Accordingly, the Nuclear Advisory Committee has been directed to pursue the resolution of legacy issues through agreements with Ontario Power Generation (#OPG), the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (#NWMO), other private nuclear operators, as well as the federal and provincial governments.' "Politically, it is often easier to ride on people’s prejudices than to challenge them. This is certainly what Legault has been doing since being elected in 2018. [...] My impression is that Smith is doing exactly the same in encouraging the view that Alberta’s problems are mainly caused by a federal government controlled by Ontario and Quebec."

nationalpostAndré Pratte: Dialogue key to decreasing tensions between Alberta and QuebecPremiers in this country should work toward, not against, a united Canada

I don't think it's a problem that #MarkCarney owns shares in 100s of companies, but if his blind trust contains US$8M in options for Brookfield, yes that does create many conflicts of interest. As the #CPC has suggested, those options ought to be exercised, then the manager of the blind trust can reinvest the money elsewhere.

It's surprising that Mr. Carney didn't do so when he became PM, and disappointing that he wasn't more honest with Canadians.

Unsure whether it's a dumb news article spurring it, but for anyone unaware:
Canadians aren't mad at/ boycotting the US over tariffs. That's just Trump screwing his own people over on a minor level*.

What Canadians are irritated over is being threatened with a takeover by the dude currently taking over your entire country.

Please examine your assumptions thoroughly if you aren't aware that we are the peacekeeping nation, and we see your country literally rounding up and disappearing citizens of the US. As well as catching us and other nationalities in the chaos. Who the hell would want to do business with those kinds of people??
