Defective by Design
DRM ruins efforts at historical preservation. Serge from Babka
Something I've wanted for a long time is the ability for us (my wife and I) to have a movie playing in one room and watch it in another.

There are expensive ways to do this using a media multiplexer and a house full of special cabling, but I can't do that in this rental unit.

But what I can do is use an HDMI to IP Video Streaming Encoder,. either as a hardware device I purchase, or building it myself with an HDMI to mpeg encoder and a cheap computer like a Raspberry Pi.

But here's the kicker... Because of DRM, I can't do that with any mainstream streaming services. Despite it being entirely legal, DRM makes it difficult or impossible.

But that's not a problem if I own my own media that I've ripped from physical media, which is my plan.

It also wouldn't be a problem if I copied the media from a friend (or a website), which I won't do.

The point is that if the companies are making legitimate use harder than making illegal copies.

#DRM #Copyright
