I've been working at home this morning (in Ōtautahi Christchurch, NZ) and I just saw a kārearea (NZ falcon)!!

The local korimako (NZ bellbirds) had been alarming calling on and off through the morning. I finally stepped away from my computer and walked off to find out what all the fuss was about.

I found them clustered about in a row of conifer trees, all yelling loudly, and then a falcon flew out, followed closely by all the bellbirds.

Pretty cool. I hardly ever see kārearea around home. (I just checked my home AudioMoth, which has been recording continuously in the daytime since June 2021, and at least according to BirdNet it's never heard a kārearea here.)

While Crested Caracara is not the official eagle of Mexico or even an eagle (caracaras are falcons), there used to be a popular legend that this was Mexico's national eagle

i think it's because these birds are so familiar & confident, you encounter them on their road patrols where they sometimes do pick up snakes

Phone pics from work today… there is really just so much beauty and art, natural and abstract that we tend to overlook each and every day!
Everywhere, a wonder and I am so grateful to be able to take it in and experience the magic of being alive in this fantastic realm outside the confines of the cold deadness of the space that surrounds us.
Earth is that magical place where things “come alive” with color and creatures that stories are told of and things and beings that defy logic and physics… the world we live in… wow!

… and these pics are from one day at my workplace, a tiny little fraction of what there is to behold… no, it’s not majestic waterfalls, or incredible mountain peaks watching the sunrise from above the clouds… heck, they aren’t even photos taken on a “real” camera and I’m sure my editing isn’t going to win me any magazine covers or prestigious awards but, all the same and as always, it’s all just a matter of perspective.
