Colin Purrington<p>I've updated my review of the Mosquito TNT with images and tentative IDs of the dipteran larvae that eventually took up residence inside the trap: shore flies and minute scavenger flies (among others, most likely). Unchanged is my conclusion that contraption is a scam. <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/diptera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>diptera</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/mosquitoes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mosquitoes</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/texas" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>texas</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/austin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>austin</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/entomology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>entomology</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/biology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>biology</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/flies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flies</span></a> <a href="https://colinpurrington.com/2025/06/tougher-than-toms-mosquito-tnt/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">colinpurrington.com/2025/06/to</span><span class="invisible">ugher-than-toms-mosquito-tnt/</span></a></p>
neville park<p>Today in the park, I noticed a lot of small flies around this one unhealthy-looking plant, a mint of some kind, that had been put outside the greenhouse. I looked closer to find…a flower crab spider (family Thomisidae, tribe Misumenini) feeding on a plant bug (family Miridae)! The small flies are kleptoparasites trying to get a bite of the spider's meal. It periodically flicked the flies away with its spare legs and moved around to get away from them, in vain.</p><p>I don't see flower crab spiders that often so this was a nice find.</p><p><a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/DailySpiderPic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DailySpiderPic</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/spiders" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>spiders</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/flies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flies</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/parasitism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>parasitism</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/kleptoparasitism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kleptoparasitism</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/Araneae" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Araneae</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/Thomisidae" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Thomisidae</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/Diptera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Diptera</span></a></p>
sohkamyung<p>A Horse Fly (subfamily Tabaninae) spotted at Ulu Sembawang Park Connector, Singapore on 31 Aug 2025. A large fly with extra large colourful eyes. Female Horse Flies bite mammals to get blood. Fortunately, this one appears to be a male, so I was left alone. Phew! 🙂 </p><p>On iNaturalist [ <a href="https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/310422815" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">inaturalist.org/observations/3</span><span class="invisible">10422815</span></a> ].</p><p><a href="https://photog.social/tags/iNaturalist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>iNaturalist</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Nature</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Photography</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Singapore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Singapore</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Insects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Insects</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Flies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Flies</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Diptera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Diptera</span></a></p>
