Think global. Act local.
A court decision that local effects must be considered may limit fossil fuel mining & thus exports. Will it hold?

World’s top court says climate inaction can breach international law – POLITICO

Climate Triumph in World’s Highest Court
The International Court of Justice at The Hague has ruled that countries are legally obliged to prevent harms caused by climate change.
Judges clarified the legal obligations that countries have to protect the Earth’s climate system for current and future generations.
They also clarified the legal consequences for nations that fail to do so, threatening major implications for fossil-fuel producing nations and ensuring a definite managed phase out of the production of fossil fuels.
Bizarrely taking the stance of enemies to humanity and its future generations, countries including the UK, USA and Australia tried in vain to argue against the ruling.
The case is the climax of a path that started with students in Vanuatu in 2019.
The small pacific nation is prone to cyclones, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, flooding rain and drought, the risks of which are compounded by climate change.
The court’s findings should signal a new era for climate justice and influence a wave of worldwide climate litigation.

Grandfather of six takes on a senior advisor to Danielle Smith over his conflicts of interest and sole-sourced contracts worth nearly a half a million dollars.

Countries must prevent harm to the climate system and tackle fossil fuels to ensure the right to life.
"...The international court of justice (ICJ) said countries must prevent harm to the climate system and that failing to do so could result in their having to pay compensation and make other forms of restitution."
"The unanimous opinion covers a wide range of matters under international law. It says states are liable for all kinds of activities that harm the climate, but it takes explicit aim at fossil fuels. It says that a state’s failure to take appropriate action to protect the climate system from greenhouse gas emissions, including through the production and consumption of fossil fuels, the granting of fossil fuel exploration licences or the provision of fossil fuel subsidies, “may constitute an international wrongful act which is attributable to that state”.
"The court said a clean, healthy and sustainable environment was a precondition for exercising many human rights, such as the right to life, the right to health and the right to an adequate standard of living, including access to water, food and housing."
