This doorway in Nürnberg mostly survived being bombed in WWII and is used as an example of the “unhappy’ nature of German ornament, which seems xenophobic even for 1896.

This 1896 engraving shows the entrance to Batalha Monastery The portrayal of light and shadow, foreground and depth, is very strong here.

There are clear Moorish influences, i’d say, being no expert in such things.

The paper used in Smithś Gothic Architecture book is smooth, calendared, and makes for easy scanning and cleaning up with #GIMP

The cover of Black Sabbath's 1970 debut album was shot at Mapledurham Watermill, Oxfordshire. To get the right light, the shoot was conducted at 4.00 am. Contrary to popular belief, the hooded figure is not Ozzy Osbourne, but an 18-year-old female model. The model was chosen for her short stature, to make her look overwhelmed by the eerie landscape. To enhance the photo's uncanny feel, a smoke machine was used and the shot was taken with film used for aerial photographs, which gave the photo its pinkish light. The film was also boiled then frozen to make the image grainier. Props included a stuffed crow - named Yorick - who appears on the back cover and, apparently, a live black cat. The Shell Grotto, in Margate, Kent, is a series of underground tunnels and chambers covered in elaborate shell mosaics. The grotto is thought to be decorated with around 4.6 million seashells and seems to have been unknown until its discovery in 1835. Various theories have been put forward to explain the grotto's function. Some think it was a rich man's folly, but these structures were built to be shown off rather than hidden. An 'Altar Chamber' suggests it may have been used for religious or ritual purposes, possibly by the Freemasons, the Knights Templars, or Roman Catholics evading persecution. Monument of naught

"I ain't here to listen while you speak. I ain't here to heal your broken soul. Am I here at all?"

Stoodley Pike, near Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. The pike was initially erected as "a peace monument" to celebrate the end of the Napoleonic Wars. However, the hilltop monument was destroyed by lightning on February 8th, 1854. This was the very day the Russian ambassador left London prior to Britain joining Crimean War. The Halifax Guardian pronounced it "an evil omen" that this monument to peace should tumble on the eve of a fresh conflict. A new monument was built to mark the restoration of peace in 1856. The new pike was positioned a little way back from the edge of the hill and a lightning conductor was later installed.
