Paco Hope #resist<p>Anybody out there in <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homelab</span></a> land using <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/TrueNAS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TrueNAS</span></a> Scale with VMs?</p><p>I've built a nice, reliable NAS. And then I noticed that it could do VMs. Great! I thought. I have a couple different VMs running some important things like <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a>.</p><p>What I have discovered is that their VM support is terrible. Unless I misunderstand, I literally cannot do any of these things:</p><ul><li>backup a VM</li><li>restore a VM</li><li>export a VM</li><li>import a VM</li><li>snapshot a VM</li></ul><p>If I treat each VM like a full <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> host, I can back it up using something else (e.g., <code>rsync</code>). But if this was <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/xcp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>xcp</span></a> with Xen Orchestra, I'd have this whole thing solved in seconds.</p><p>I'm thinking about creating a big VM, running a nested hypervisor (XCP) and then running my VMs there. But that sounds like a huge faff. And even then, while I could snapshot the child VMs, that parent VM running the hypervisor would be hard to backup/restore.</p><p>I have plenty of RAM and spare CPU cycles on my NAS. But I've only recently understood how bad this VM support is. If I lost my HomeAssistant VM I'd cry.</p><p>Anybody have thoughts on this?<br><a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/selfhosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>selfhosting</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/selfhosted" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>selfhosted</span></a></p>

froqstar<p>Project <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/minirack" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>minirack</span></a> is done :)<br>The goal was to have a nice "living room capable" 10" rack to hold my <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/homeasssitant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeasssitant</span></a> box with a touch display for smart home control, a network switch and a UPS. <br>And no it is not living in the livingroom now, nor was it planned ;) I could have moved the network wiring to the back/inside, but in the end it needed a little nerd factor.</p><p>Mostly made from laser cut plywood in <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/kumiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kumiko</span></a> pattern that I spray painted black, and some 3D printed parts. Abishek Muthian<p>The issue was with nr-gotify node, it crashed the NodeRED when it couldn't reach my gotify server. Now I check if the gotify server is reachable before sending the message. Also added catch all node and used JSONata for first time to concat timestamp with the message.</p><p>Looking forward to use more of the JSONata to avoid writing JavaScript in the NodeRED, JS is weirder than usual here.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nodered" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nodered</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/gotify" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gotify</span></a></p>

I see some new attention to dashboards in the latest #HomeAssistant which is great.

I need to spend some time learning how to do more with dashboards and cards, as I'm not wild about the information density and organization I've been able to achieve so far (which has been rudimentary)

#homeassistant Can anyone help me? I've installed HA on my Synology drive, and the client on my Android tablet. I have several Govee bulbs and light strips, but HA has only found one strip. And now I'm stuck. How can I get it to recognize the others? Thanks for any help.

Continued thread

Replaced old 1950s receptacle w new one. Added clamp-on current sensors out to a #Zigbee unit in a separate (plastic) box to contact #HomeAssistant.

Broke the tab off to split the receptacle and applied sensors to track dehumidifier and sump pump separately.

Needed a sensor flip to fix current dir, but it works nicely now. I get an email if the pump comes on!

Only in the house 6mo or so, and don't think the sump pump has run yet. We'll see how spring goes – probably the riskiest period.
