I have a frustration. We publish #inkscape on the Microsoft Store, mostly for people who's workplaces or surface tablets forbid them from installing directly.

But it's a headache. We have no employees, and the linux engineer who does the packaging is a volunteer. Week before last Inkscape's botched upgrade from 1.3.2 to 1.4.2 in the store (very late) caused about 4.5k people (real humans) to not be able to use Inkscape for an entire week before the install error was fixed.

This is ... 1/2

Wicked Wonderful Wordies - #wordplay #wordies #idiom

Happy weekend from here, #puzzle fans!

Idioms or common phrases (American/English) are represented by the position, shape or arrangement of words in or around the puzzle frame.

Can you figure out this week's wordie? It would be wicked wonderful if you can.

Please use CW to submit your answers, thanks. Give everybody the chance to guess.

For the last few days, I've been looking for a whiteboard/mood board open source app for artists that could replace Miro or Milanote. Something that can handle huge whiteboards where I can arrange images as I please, zoom in and zoom out freely.

Turns out, #inkscape is actually pretty incredible for this. With images added to the page as "Embed" and "Blocky (optimise speed)", I can have dozens of ultra-high-res images that I can arrange as I please. I can add all my Download folder at once, click "Rearrange -> Unclump" and all the images are going to be neatly arranged on the whiteboard. It's quite convenient to add labels, colour-tag the images by grouping them with the coloured rectangles, and it's possible to add hand-written notes, too.

I recommend this as an aspiring #artist :D But really, you probably can use this as a local alternative to Pinterest boards, too.

I wonder if the SVG files Inkscape saves are easily diff-able; if yes, it should be even possible to do cooperative edits through Github.

Here is a preview design for a (business) card promoting the Fediverse (made in Inkscape).
I plagiarized the idea from
@juergen_hubert@mementomori.social who has created card templates people can print and give out at protests.
Instead, i'm doing fully designed cards for more generic use. Lending my graphic design skills to the community. I will put these out as print ready files under a (non-commercial) Creative Commons license - so anyone can get a stack cheaply printed themselves to give out places or leave in coffee shops etc.
If there is interest, I will do a bunch of different designs, different languages, and a US size (I'm designing to EU standards). Plus maybe some stickers and posters too?
This particular design is my trademark 'busy with movement' style. I've based the design on the colours and shapes from the official Fediverse logo.

As a test, I added these hanging props only seen in a couple of episodes in the TNG sickbay, which I had modeled years ago as a commission, to the surgical area as a test, and I must admit I like them as they kinda fit the somewhat awkward aesthetics.

Also went back to the old replicator design, but gave it a contrasting color like they had on Voyager. Finally, I populated the set with more props and swapped some of the chairs for different designs.

OMG, #Inkscape has Arc editing stuck in Designer hell for 6 years, so much so that multiple contributors keep trying to write it from scratch (wasting time) and it keeps getting blocked on UI not being good enough.

Our oldest open MR (draft) is from 2019 and it just, sigh. Sometimes janky stuff just needs to be merged so it can be worked on and not recoded over and over. (hot take!)

Decided to finish some of the many ADHD-induced half-done projects I have, starting with the USS Pride sickbay.

A redress of the Potemkin sickbay as they're both Excelsior-class ships, Pride's goes a bit darker and more DS9/Voyager in its style rather than the standard TNG of Potemkin's.

Still a lot to do, but this should be a relatively fast project.

TIL: #Inkscape has a toggle to stop the stroke width from changing when you resize an object. I've spent years frustrated by this, and never once thought to actually look for a toggle! 🤦‍♂️
