In the ’80s, arcade games like Cyberball hinted at worlds run by machines, where strategy and speed ruled. Those pixelated battles planted seeds. Writers pull inspiration from the strangest places—old games, childhood memories, neon buzz. Frank Gullo’s novella Only Human follows a quarterback proving humanity still matters in a sport dominated by machines. His origin story is a nostalgic, thoughtful ride.
