Australia's reputation for deadly #wildlife stems from its geological #history, when the continent broke away from Gondwana 100 million years ago, taking some venomous species along for the ride.
While 65% of #Australia's snakes are venomous (compared to just 15% worldwide), most evolved from a single ancestor that arrived 40 million years ago, diversifying into different habitats and developing more potent venoms over time.

'Im Vorbeigehen'
...habe ich am Samstag diese Baby-Ringelnatter entdeckt, die auf dem Gehweg in Richtung Bundesstraße unterwegs war. Mit etwas Parsel konnte ich sie dann doch überzeugen, sich in die Gegenrichtung zu schlängeln.

Obviously neither parent are freaking out and that helps a lot in teaching #LittleHumans how to handle #snakes if they have to.
Good parenting here: not making the little one feel guilty about leaving the door open in the first place (it happens to all of us) and by remaining calm and encouraging throughout. Well done. good #parenting.
Now about snakes…. I just don’t like them.
I had to move this out of harm’s way during some yard work this afternoon
Online search tells me it’s:
"a San Francisco Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia), a highly distinctive and endangered subspecies of the common garter snake."
I'm happy for it to be here (#Sonoma), but it seems a little far from home — and I'm left wondering how it traversed the Golden Gate
Encountered this big, beautiful snake lying across the trail.

Death adder? More like life subtracter.
All summer I’ve been trying to get close enough to one of the huge female snakes to get a good photo of her pattern and coloring. But I haven’t yet because, you know, MASSIVE SNAKE. But yesterday she was in the perfect position (ie. not looking at me.)

Being startled by a Degenhardt’s Scorpion-eating Snake on a trail in Costa Rica was quite a way to end our morning hike. It sure got our hearts racing for a few minutes. #snakes #reptiles #nature #hiking #CostaRica #NaturePhotography https://frametoframe.ca/startled-by-a-snake-on-sky-walk-in-la-fortuna-costa-rica/
Yestereve's unexpected visitor. Caused some commotion before we established that it was just a non-poisonous grass-snake ("snok"). It's protected by law, but so are vipers. #Nature #NaturePhotography #NatureBeauty #snakes #visitor
No post yesterday But I tidied up the place a bit. Pinned some icons and added the 'Network neighborhood' to feature blogs I follow.
The funny thing is that back in the XP days I didn't have any icons on the desktop to keep it clean and memory-efficient. It's a bit strang to see the long list of post icons wiggling there like some long Nokia-snake's tail.
