🇦🇺🐍 Australia's reputation for deadly #wildlife stems from its geological #history, when the continent broke away from Gondwana 100 million years ago, taking some venomous species along for the ride.

While 65% of #Australia's snakes are venomous (compared to just 15% worldwide), most evolved from a single ancestor that arrived 40 million years ago, diversifying into different habitats and developing more potent venoms over time.

New video out!
Last week was skipped due to illness (which is still trying to linger, so thanks for your patience), but we have a new vid this week, wrapping up the trip this past May into Utah. There was heartbreak, frustration, a lot of travel in these last two days...but also some beautiful animals turned up to help make things worth it.

Obviously neither parent are freaking out and that helps a lot in teaching #LittleHumans how to handle #snakes if they have to.

Good parenting here: not making the little one feel guilty about leaving the door open in the first place (it happens to all of us) and by remaining calm and encouraging throughout. Well done. good #parenting.

Now about snakes…. I just don’t like them.

I had to move this out of harm’s way during some yard work this afternoon

Online search tells me it’s:

"a San Francisco Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia), a highly distinctive and endangered subspecies of the common garter snake."

I'm happy for it to be here (#Sonoma), but it seems a little far from home — and I'm left wondering how it traversed the Golden Gate

All summer I’ve been trying to get close enough to one of the huge female snakes to get a good photo of her pattern and coloring. But I haven’t yet because, you know, MASSIVE SNAKE. But yesterday she was in the perfect position (ie. not looking at me.) 😄

New video out!
The second Utah video from this year is now public, a return to the Mojave Desert part of the state where things are still tough, but life finalyl decided to make a grander appearance than before. A new subspecies of snake, a new species of lizard, and some rather impressive examples of otherwise common species!

No post yesterday 😅 But I tidied up the place a bit. Pinned some icons and added the 'Network neighborhood' to feature blogs I follow.

The funny thing is that back in the XP days I didn't have any icons on the desktop to keep it clean and memory-efficient. It's a bit strang to see the long list of post icons wiggling there like some long Nokia-snake's tail.
