Bei dem Grauschnäpper handelt es sich um einen Ansitzjäger, der auf einer exponierten Warte sitzt und auf vorbeifliegende Insekten wartet, um dann in aufwendigen Flugmanövern hinter diesen hinterher zu fliegen. Er ernährt sich hauptsächlich von fliegenden Insekten, ergänzt seinen Speiseplan im Sommer und Herbst aber auch gerne durch Beeren. Der Grauschnäpper steht auf der Vorwarnliste.

: The spotted flycatcher (Muscicapa striata) is a bird species in the flycatcher family (Muscicapidae). The European population declined between 1970 and 1990 and has been largely stable since then. In the 2015 Red List of breeding birds in Germany, the species is on the early warning list. With a body length of 13.5 to 15 cm, the species is about the size of a house sparrow. This flycatcher inhabits large parts of the western and central Palearctic from the boreal to the Mediterranean zone. In an east-west direction, its distribution extends from Portugal and Ireland across almost all of Europe to northeastern Mongolia. The spotted flycatcher is tied to taller trees, which, thanks to a large number of perches, allow the use of open airspace for hunting insects in the air and on the ground. It therefore inhabits primarily open areas in forests of all kinds, including field groves, but also parks, cemeteries, gardens and avenues in villages and towns.
