Devil's Tower National Monument, Wyoming

Many American Indian tribes consider this place sacred, and have a long history that is intertwined with it.

Most maps from 1857 to 1901 mark this feature as Bear Lodge or Bears Lodge (a translation from a common Lakota name for the Tower, Mato Tipila).

Geologists have studied the formation since the late 1800s, and today still wonder how it formed.

When I was 20, I traveled through Europe by train. It was a profoundly enlightening experience. I began to understand that many of the problems we’re told are unique to our country are, in fact, human problems—shared across borders. People everywhere are navigating similar challenges. That realization was precious. But what stayed with me even more deeply was something simpler: the quiet magic of traveling by train. Since then, wherever I go, I try to take the train.

One thing I love about traveling -- whether on vacation or a business trip -- is the element of exploration: we're in a new place, where people eat differently, live differently, think differently (one hopes; not everyone, yet, thinks along the lines of U.S. TV culture!), and there is so much to discover.

A simple walk becomes an expedition . . .
