It really is made for a dial-up world.</p><p>Also we don't actually have all that much traffic on our network to begin with, considering <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/usenet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>usenet</span></a> is kinda... I don't want to write dead, but it if it was a body it might start smelling soon.</p>

RxBrad<p>Looks like DrunkenSlug registrations are open this morning. It's a great NZB platform for <em>finding</em> downloads on Usenet. I cannot speak for #Australia and I didn't witness it actually done for Usenet, firsthand. But people definitely had conversations about the comparatively large bandwidth of shipping storage devices around. Magtape rather than discs would have been the better idea in this case, though.

We defiinitely did this sort of thing ad hoc in the BBS world, for files more than for echomail.

It's still a thing today. Big companies with lots of data can pay Amazon for something called a "Snowball Edge", one variant of which has 200TiB of storage. It comes via courier, and gets shipped back to Amazon for upload.
