The bamboo forest, mountain lookout, and other attractions of Arashiyama were all awesome to my guest visiting Kyōto (嵐山、京都).

Showing an American professor friend the magnificent temple Daikakuji (大覚寺) and its big pond area. It was the temple of Emperor Saga (嵯峨天皇), and the area is named Saga Arashiyama (嵯峨嵐山). I told her the history (or saga!) of how Emperor Saga's patronage of Kūkai (空海) in the early 9th Century [also recall my recent photos and explanation of the temple Tōji (東寺)] was a key to launching the golden age of the Heian Period (平安時代). The national capital Heian-Kyō (平安京) is now called Kyōto (京都).

Kotokiki-chaya (琴きき茶屋) in Arashiyama is famous for its 2 types of sakura-mochi.
The 1st is unusual because there is no bean filling, taking its flavour from the 2 sakura leaves.
The 2nd, wrapped in red bean paste, is shaped like Mt.Arashi. It has been served for 110 years.

Of all the temples in Kyōto, Jōjakkō-ji's (常寂光寺) seasonal transformations are some of the most beautiful.
