THE REAL KIDS
All Kindsa Girls / Common At Noon
1999 U.S. 7” single reissue

Continuing to plow through the records I bought while I was in California.

From my hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, I’m not sure I’d call The Real Kids a great band.
I think they’re mostly remembered for having one really great SONG, and that’s about it.
I got rid of my copy of their 1977 self-titled album because other than “All Kindsa Girls”, it never did a damn thing for me.

Which is great that I found this in L.A.! Great #powerpop song, which the band has been dry-humping for almost 50 years.

PUNISHMENT OF LUXURY
Engine Of Excess / Jellyfish
1979 UK 7” single

The second of the two killer #45rpm finds from Left Of The Dial Records in Orange, Ca..

Was AMPED to find this!
About a decade or so ago, I downloaded a folder of obscure/forgotten #70s and #80s #punk abd #newwave songs, and included in that was “Engine Of Excess” by POL.

The b-side is really fun too, but the A is a true gem for fans of that genre’s time frame.

Their debut from ‘79, Laughing Academy”, still eludes me. However…

Neither of the two songs on THIS single (from the same year) appear on the album, which made this a very cool find for me.

I kinda always wanted to be in a band that LOOKS like them. That’s a killer back photo.
How could you not want to at least listen to whatever has THAT photo on the back?

Our Darkness – Die 100 besten Songs zwischen New Wave & Gothic laut Radio Eins (rbb)

AU PAIRS
Playing With A Different Sex
2025 Europe MOV reissue
Turquoise #vinyl

Last week before I head to California for a few weeks to go to Disneyland and to do some crate digging.

Getting my week started with some early #80s art punk.
I love this record.

And if any of you come across it, don’t hesitate to buy it. Because it sounds incredible. I’ve never had an original of this, but I can’t imagine even an OG sounding better than this. The popular opinion is that this is superior to the original issue.

The rhythm section on this record in particular sounds fantastic.

GANG OF FOUR
Entertainment!
2014 Europe reissue

Let’s get angular.

Other than Jonny Greenwood, there is no guitar player whose style I feel is more analogous to mine than Andy Gill’s.

Violent, slashing, minimalist. Used more as a weapon than as a tool for virtuosity. It was the thing I always loved about Gang Of Four, and still do.

Without Gill, I’m not sure how interesting they would have been. They probably would have sounded like more conventional #newwave or #postpunk , probably devoid of the personality and space his playing provided.

This album in particular is an absolute masterclass in everything that made Andy GREAT.

I miss him immensely, and music owes a lot to him.
