My name is GordoHas anyone else on a mission to find a daily driver search engine that isn't Google or Bing given Mojeek a look? It's been around since 2004, with its own crawler and index of somewhere in the realm of 6-7 billion pages, all run from a data center in the UK run by Custodian Data Centres, who claim its one of the greenest in the country (can't vouch for the veracity of that claim; it's all news to me).They've also been lamenting the state of search on the web for years, and discussing the need for more independent search indexes, so they seem to be on the right side of the fight. Obviously, corporations are not your friends, so yeah, that could change at any moment, but while I like SearXNG (when my preferred instance is fully operational; it was barely usable for the last day or two), and Startpage when it's not telling me I'm blocked for acting like a bot or using a VPN I'm definitely not using???, they're both still meta engines aggregating results from the usual suspects (in the case of SearXNG, a very flexible one that lets the end user choose which sources they want/don't want results from, but still), so I think there's value in having at least one other actual independent crawler with its own index, and much like web browsers, it's an increasingly difficult thing to do from scratch without VC money (Cliqz tried, but couldn't survive the pandemic).Anyway, I set it as my default engine in LibreFox yesterday, and am going to trial it for at least a few days to see how it goes. Wingdings are IncomprehensibleI was watching Mutahar (SomeOrdinaryGamers), he was talking about self-hosting SearXNG locally on his machine for anonymous search. He was only talking about it because, PewDiePie, was talking about running various things locally on his PC and deGoogling his own hardware (Felix is becoming the open source rep we needed in these troubling times).This feels like a game changer that I vaguely knew about, but never tried on my own. If the initial test goes well on my desktop, this means that installing Docker and hosting a local search engine on my Laptop is next.However, reading the documentation is always essential; I have downloaded the .deb for Docker, and will start the process of installing it eventually. As the documentation is filled with various little side bits to read, it seems a bit complex. Unfortunately yacy is inherently slow, which impacts search requests in general.The weird way it's gathering results from other peers actually will cause a timeout on the first search with the search terms (unless you set a timeout of 10 seconds or so), but on further refined search passes it's able to provide results in line with other search engines. not a martian, honestI think <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/yacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#yacy</a> has potential as a search engine, but I really have to check how I could get this to run reliably. The results it gave me were at least interesting, but both on my vps and on my desktop it became unusable within 20 minutes or so. I feel like I am doing something wrong there.Instead I installed <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/searxng" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#searxng</a>, which is a self-hosted metasearch engine. And it works quite well, but it still is dependent on huge companies.

The world is going to hell in a handbasket, but there are tiny pockets hither and thither that help make the journey slightly more comfortable. =/
