Dag-Rune ZSvartisen glacier peeking at the sea past Steintinden mountain Svartisen, “Black ice” glacier, are the collective name of the second and fourth largest glaciers in mainland Norway. This is the largest, the West glacier at 201 square kilometres, and close to 1400-meter altitude. It is just short of Steintinden mountain peak at 1534 meter above sea level to the south in this photo. Svartisen glacier is the second largest in continental Europe. It reaches the lowest point of any glacier in Europe, at 20 metres above sea level at Engabreen subglacier. Most of Svartisen lays at 1000 meter above sea level. It is an enormous amount of ice and water. The landscape around this glacier is formed by older glaciers grinding and forming the mountain, peaks, valleys and fjords.
