abolitionmedia
Important Information from Indonesia for International Comrades

Indonesia, September 18, 2025, by XIII-XII.

After the mass action that took place at the end of August and early September, a wave of mass arrests followed, with thousands of people being detained across various cities in Indonesia — both post-action arrests and sweeps from those already arrested. Even now, various anti-authoritarian groups in Indonesia are experiencing widespread paranoia, which is understandable for some people due to the state’s cyber operations aimed at mapping both formal and informal anti-authoritarian cells. Several collective and individual names have already been collected, which only adds to the paranoid climate that continues to persist. Some refer to this as “going underground,” or even as an individual safety method, to later continue efforts for solidarity with comrades who have been designated as suspects. The state has labeled anarchists as the masterminds behind all the mass actions that took place in various cities. For example, in Bandung, the authorities have designated 42 protesters as suspects, and in Jakarta, 16 people have been labeled as suspects. This doesn’t even account for other cities that have not yet been verified. All those who are detained face obstacles in accessing legal assistance, and torture is not spared during interrogation and examination.

In a press conference held by the authorities some time ago, they stated that there is a connection between anarchists in Indonesia and international anarchist networks. They also raised concerns about the flow of funds traced from digital wallets as money for chaos, even reporting amounts up to tens or even hundreds of millions of rupiah — a figure that seems quite unreasonable. They have also used various books, zines, and pamphlets as evidence of anarchist actions. All of this has
been criminalized under a new form of terrorism in Indonesia. However, logically speaking, the state is openly the true terrorist to the oppressed people of Indonesia, through land grabs, low wages, unequal education, media suppression, activist killings, and so on. These criminalization efforts are also actions to scapegoat alternative methods for sustaining life without the grip of the state and its apparatus.

Today, in Indonesia, we have entered a new phase — after the ghosts of communism and the Jakarta method — in hunting anarchists, or even any movements that are seen as disturbing the stability and interests of the state. Everyone is an individual with the potential to be criminalized by the state. Therefore, to anyone reading this, continue to raise solidarity for the political prisoners of August-September so they know they are not alone. Long live resistance, long live anarchy!

–

Important Information from Indonesia for International Comrades

After some time following the large-scale demonstrations across various parts of the archipelago, the lack of information from our comrades who have been arrested for their actions has been a difficult challenge for us.

Firstly, the lack of communication from our comrades who have been arrested and charged stems from communication restrictions imposed by the pigs. They were even denied legal assistance and communication with their families for approximately two weeks. This was confirmed as part of the effort to investigate the motives behind the charges.

Then, suddenly, the pigs held a press conference and invited various local media outlets to cover everything, even releasing the names of those who had been charged to the public.

In the information released, particularly regarding those arrested by the West Java Police Headquarters, our comrades are being processed by two divisions: general crime (26 people) and cybercrime (16 people). These pigs have identified anarchist-egoist-nihilist subjects as a new source of threat in Indonesia, especially due to their alleged connection to international networks.

For everyone’s safety, if anyone has had, or is still in correspondence with Black Bloc Zone or Contemplative Publishing, we recommend stopping this immediately, as these two names have been identified as key actors by the pigs. It is highly likely that their websites, Instagram accounts, or even their Signal accounts are still under investigation.

Stay safe and don’t be deceived!

For Black International!

–

Chronology of the New Wave of Arrests (“The Hunt for the Egoists”)

1. Trigger event – The group around comrade Acil (Itenas – university of Bandung, West Java). Acil was arrested after posting on social media about an Indonesian flag burning

2. First link – From Acil’s case, police traced and arrested 8 people from Kiara Condong area where they had uploaded content showing them making and throwing molotovs.

3. Network expansion – Adit (UIN – Uni in Bandung) and Opal (Cijerah/Ciparay area) were also arrested. It’s unclear if they were directly linked to Acil, but their arrest opened a new line of investigation.

4. Start of the manhunt – Through intense Instagram communications between Adit and Opal, police began mapping further connections.

5. Initial mapping – Authorities identified links between Egoist accounts, funding sources, and physical evidence (molotovs, etc). From this chain, Pem (lives in Ciamis-West Java) was arrested.

6. Next wave – Arrests continued with Katong Press (Komar, East Java). followed by Dana, Herdi (Palang Hitam/ABC Indonesia), and Abu from Makassar. Katong Press is the name of an anarchist collective.

7. Shift in Legal Framing- Investigators begin applying the Anti-Terrorism Law, citing:

Suspected foreign funding,

Acts of arson

Confessions from detainees admitting to destruction during protests.

8. Information Leak – From Dana’s case, additional leads emerged, targeting networks in Bogor and Tangerang (West Java).

Preliminary Mitigations Notes Scope:
So far, only the “Egoist wave” is clearly mapped but further arrest waves remain uncertain. The ages of those arrested is teenagers and 20s predominately so far. It is impossible for our group to count all the anarchists arrested, there’s no one big organisation. Just loose cells and individuals. But those universities mentioned are sanctuaries of most anarchists. These universities were attacked and raided by police during the clashes. At the moment there are many anarchists concentrated in the central police station of Bandung.

14/9/25

–

16 comrades arrested for Molotov attacks

According to corporate media dated 15 September 2025, 16 people were arrested almost simultaneously in various places around Jakarta and accused of Molotov attacks. The scale of the operation and the evidence gathered (CCTV footage, phone conversations, looted items, etc) is very serious.

–

More updates coming…

Important Information from Indonesia for International Comrades

https://abolitionmedia.noblogs.org/?p=21525

#anarchist #asia #indonesia #insurrection #repression #riots

MikeDunnAuthor
Today in Labor History August 1, 1921: Sheriff Sid Hatfield and Ed Chambers were murdered by Baldwin-Felts private cops. They did it in retaliation for Hatfield’s role in the Matewan labor battle in 1920, when two Felts family thugs were killed by Hatfield and his deputies. Sheriff Hatfield had sided with the coal miners during their strike. The private cops executed Hatfield and Chambers on the Welch County courthouse steps in front of their wives. This led to the Battle of Blair Mountain, where 20,000 coal miners marched to the anti-union stronghold Logan County to overthrow Sheriff Dan Chaffin, the coal company tyrant who murdered miners with impunity. The Battle of Blair Mountain started in September 1921. The armed miners battled 3,000 police, private cops and vigilantes, who were backed by the coal bosses. It was the largest labor uprising in U.S. history, and the largest armed insurrection since the Civil War. The president of the U.S. eventually sent in 27,000 national guards. Over 1 million rounds were fired. Up to 100 miners were killed, along with 10-30 Baldwin-Felts detectives and 3 national guards. They even dropped bombs on the miners from planes, the second time in history that the U.S. bombed its own citizens (the first being the pogrom against black residents of Tulsa, earlier that same year).

Several novels portray the Battle of Blair Mountain, including Storming Heaven, by Denise Giardina, (1987), Blair Mountain, by Jonathan Lynn (2006), and Carla Rising, by Topper Sherwood (2015). And one of my favorite films of all time, “Matewan,” by John Sayles (1987), portrays the Matewan Massacre and the strike leading up to it. The film has a fantastic soundtrack of Appalachian music from the period. And the great West Virginia bluegrass singer, Hazel Dickens, sings the title track, "Fire in the Hole." She also appears in the film as a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.

You can read my complete article on the Battle of Blair Mountain, and Matewan, here: https://michaeldunnauthor.com/2024/04/14/the-battle-of-blair-mountain/

#workingclass #LaborHistory #mining #westvirginia #strike #union #police #vigilantes #uprising #racism #riots #blackwallstreet #film #novel #books @bookstadon

MikeDunnAuthor
Today in Labor History July 28, 1917: The Silent Parade took place in New York City, in protest against murders, lynchings, and other violence directed towards African Americans. Organizers set up the parade to protest the East Saint Louis race riots (May-July 1917), when whites murdered up to 200 African Americans, and caused 6,000 black residents to become homeless. While Woodrow Wilson was entering World War I to “make the world safe for democracy,” black Americans were asking when he’d do the same for them.

The Silent March was organized by a coalition of groups, led by the new NAACP. Up to 15,000 participated. Organizers wanted president Wilson to enact anti-lynching legislation. He refused. Wilson appointed numerous racists to his cabinet and was an outspoken defender of segregation on “scientific” grounds. He was also fond of telling racist jokes. As an academic, prior to his political career, he was an apologist for slavery. And he used his authority to actively prevent admitting African Americans into Princeton as students or faculty. Ironically, one of the primary organizers of the Silent March, W.E.B. DuBois, had been an enthusiastic supporter of the Woodrow Wilson presidential candidacy, calling him a “liberal Southerner,” who would deal fairly with Negros.

The East Saint Louis racist pogrom occurred during one of the largest migrations of black workers from the South to the North. Between 1910 and 1920, half a million African Americans migrated north to Chicago, Saint Louis, Detroit, Philadelphia, and other cities. In 1919, there were 38 different racist riots in the U.S., all directed against the black community. The massacre in East Saint Louis began in response to a strike by white employees of the Aluminum Ore Company, after the bosses hired black replacement workers, a common practice of the bosses to divide the working class and weaken unions. Additionally, many of the unions were overtly racist and excluded black workers, including the Aluminum Ore union. To make matters worse, employment agents were going to the South and recruiting African Americans under false pretenses, offering them stable jobs and housing when, in reality, they were being recruited to work as scabs. So, it is likely that many, if not most, of the workers didn’t even know they were being hired as scabs. Regardless, they wouldn’t have been allowed to join the union, either.

Racism by unions and white workers was not inevitable in those days, and it was certainly counterproductive to the aims of working people of all backgrounds and identities. Consider that in 1920, in rural Mingo County, West Virginia, when the coal bosses brought in African American workers as scabs, the UMWA encouraged them to join the union and the strike, and achieved solidarity between white, native-born workers, African Americans from the South, and Italian immigrants. This is portrayed in John Sayles film, Matewan. And by 1916, thanks largely to the superb organizing of Ben Fletcher, all but two of Philadelphia’s docks were controlled by the IWW, uniting a workforce that was 33% Irish, 33% Polish & Lithuanian, and 33% African American. Fletcher also traveled up and down the east coast organizing dockers across race. At that time, roughly 10% of the IWW’s 1 million members were African American.

Read my biography of Fletcher here: https://michaeldunnauthor.com/2021/05/13/ben-fletcher-and-the-iww-dockers/

#workingclass #LaborHistory #africanamerican #racism #lynching #protest #riots #naacp #union #strike #scab #IWW #benfletcher #webdubois #BlackMastadon

MikeDunnAuthor
Today in Labor History July 27, 1919: Riots erupted in Chicago when a black youth on a raft crossed an unseen "color line" at the 29th Street Beach. He was drowned by rock-throwing whites. Tensions escalated quickly when a white police officer prevented a black cop from arresting the perpetrator. 38 people eventually died in the riots that followed, and which continued until August 3. Up to 2,000 lost their homes. White gangs attacked black neighbors and workers trying to get to and from work. Black civilians organized to resist and protect each other, while the Chicago Police turned a blind eye to white on black violence. The riots were ended by the deployment of 6,000 national guards. This was just one of over 36 white supremacist pogroms against black communities that broke out across the U.S. in the year after World War I. The deadliest of these pogroms occurred in Elaine, Arkansas, where up to 240 African Americans were massacred by racists.

In the years leading up to WWI, hundreds of thousands of southern African Americans moved north to get away from segregation, lynchings, political disenfranchisement, and for better economic opportunities. Between 1916 and 1919, the African American population of Chicago increased 148% from 44,000 to 109,000. Another 20,000 poor, southern whites also moved to Chicago at this time. Most of these newcomers (black and white) moved to the Southside, which had been inhabited by poor whites, predominantly Irish. And this led to competition for housing and jobs. Irish gangs were major instigators of the violence. They even tried to provoke Eastern European communities into join them by donning black face and burning down Lithuanian and Polish homes in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

While these same racial tensions continued for decades, there was a significant period of activist solidarity and organizing between poor whites and poor blacks in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the Young Patriots worked together with the Black Panthers and Young Lords. @jamestracy and @AmySonnie write brilliantly of this history in their book, “Hillbilly Nationalists, Urban Race Rebels, and Black Power: Community Organizing in Radical Times” (2011).

#workingclass #LaborHistory #chicago #racism #riots #police #massacre #chicago #poverty #solidarity #irish #segregation #lynching #BlackMastadon #blackpanthers #younglords #youngpatriots #immigration #diaspora

Today in Labor History July 5, 1934: Two strikers were shot and killed and more than 100 were injured by San Francisco police in what came to be known as "Bloody Thursday," leading to one of the last General Strikes in U.S. history. The governor called in the National Guard to suppress the strike by the International Longshoremen’s & Warehousemen’s Union (ILWU). Police and Guard violence led to 43 injuries due to clubbing and gas, and 30 more for bullet wounds. Two chemical companies used the unrest as an opportunity to test and sell their wares. Joseph Roush, from Federal Laboratories, shot a long-range tear gas shell at the strikers. He then told his company, "I might mention that during one of the riots, I shot a long-range projectile into a group, a shell hitting one man and causing a fracture of the skull, from which he has since died. As he was a Communist, I have had no feeling in the matter and I am sorry that I did not get more."

Mike Quinn wrote about the strike in his 1949 book, “The Big Strike.” Quinn was a working-class journalist and novelist. He was an active member of the Communist Party and a writer for the ILWU.

Today in Labor History July 4, 1910: African-American boxer Jack Johnson knocked out white boxer Jim Jeffries in the 15th round, leading to race riots throughout the U.S. 11 separate riots occurred in NYC, alone. There were riots in 50 cities, including New York, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Houston, New Orleans, Atlanta, and St. Louis. At least 20 people died in these riots. Johnson, who was also known as the Galveston Giant, became the first black World Heavyweight champion in 1908, which made him unpopular with the predominantly white audience of boxing. He held that title from 1908-1915 and quickly became the most famous black man of the era. The racism against him was so intense that many, including socialist writer Jack London, called for a Great White Hope to fight him and take away his title. Jeffries, a former heavyweight world champ, came out of retirement specifically to prove “that a white man is better than a Negro.” Johnson’s victory in this fight earned him $65,000 ($2.1 million in today’s dollars).

With his winnings, Johnson opened a multi-racial restaurant and nightclub, Club Deluxe, which he ran with his white wife. Because of this, the authorities arrested him for violating the Mann act (transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes). President Trump pardoned him in 2018, something Reagan, both Bushes and even Obama refused to do. Johnson fled the country to avoid arrest, but continued boxing abroad. Eventually he turned himself in and served time at Leavenworth Prison.
