🚨 New header picture 🖼️

It shows the two supernova remnants Cassiopeia A (left, in X-rays) and Vela Jr. (right, at radio wavelengths). Both harbor a “central compact object”, a neutron star left behind together with the debris cloud after the supernova.

Researchers from the permanent independent @maxplanckgesellschaft research group “Continuous Gravitational Waves” at @mpi_grav in Hanover, Germany, have been searching for gravitational waves from these central compact objects using the volunteer distributed computing project @einsteinathome.

📄 arxiv.org/abs/2503.09731

The fact that they did not find any gravitational waves indicates that the neutron stars can only be minimally deformed.

🚨 Neues Header-Bild 🖼️

Have this friend who is newish to #astrophotography here in Sydney. He did 40-hour mosaic on the Vela Supernova remnant in h-alpha/[O-III] …. And holy heck it is incomprehensibly magnificent! 🔭

Those are exploded star gutz. At its heart is the Vela pulsar. 📡

Elfie is awesome and you should follow his recent immersion and obviously very good work in astrophotography.

If you too want to know when the long awaited recurrent #supernova explosion of T Coronae Borealis happens, well just wait. You didn't miss it, it hasn't happened yet, however pre-eruption started.

Last outbreaks were May 1866 and February 1946, so 2025 is likely. T CrB has two components: a red giant star in close orbit with a white dwarf. Theoretically accumulated mattercould push past the 1.4 solar mass Chandrasekhar Limit, forcing a Type Ia supernova. I would love to see that! #astronomy
