Some people on the #fediverse are all about having their hermit kingdom - apparently.
When I'm talking #attentioneconomy and #monetization it sets a few of you off, because you can't see a middleway or compromise in how you want things to be done.
With constant prodding, it seems apparent that the only want here is not to liberate people from the major platforms, but to form a walled garden that suits your taste - and your taste alone - like filter lists don't exist.
It's the #MeVerse.
@hopland I expect very few folks aim to liberate those who follow click-bait. I think they aim to provide content, much of it just written, for people who are prepared to take the time to engage with the actual ideas.
@pagangod so...
You're saying that snobby people who make boring, slow paced content shouldn't have to compete with actual content creators, because that would take away attention from them?
Because that's what I read. Like there is no responsible entertaining content in the world from what you said - just clickbait?
I want Dylan, the guy who wrote "Weirdo" and other creators to come on over - to liberate themselves. Not MrBeast...
But that would have away your attention? Please elucidate.
@hopland So what is your #AttentionEconomy economic model? Who is providing the input money? Are the consumers paying directly for the content? Or are advertisers paying for ads alongside the content (not a thing in the fediverse, I think)? Or is someone paying for personal data revealed by people interacting with the content (also not a thing in the fediverse, I think)?
Who controls the flow of that money? Does the instance hosting the content creator get the money and pass it on? Do all the instances routing the content to the users following the content creator get the money, and pass it on to the hosting instance or the creator? Is the creator running their own instance with . . . a pay wall or something? And who sets the rates, terms, etc. of those payment and money flows?
Bookstores are entertainment. So are video game arcades. So do you specifically want the videos-on-social-media economy? In that case, you mostly need to link to YouTube or TikTok, and those corporate platforms handle the ads, personal data sales, and content creator compensation.
@hopland Or are you looking for something like
https://nebula.tv/
which I coincidentally became aware of because I watched this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCedclz03uI
because it was in some way (I think) linked (maybe?) on Mastodon by
@jam
who I support on Patreon?
@pagangod @jam #nebula is a great example, because as an independent production company they are the David vs Googles Goliath.
They have their own subscription system and their own platform. But you do know that it entails a lot of work, in developing and testing such a platform.
I.e, the barrier to entry for something like Nebula is high - especially considering the talent they had on staff since day 1.
But what if #PeerTube had monetization systems built in, for all to use?
