Yes, you take your chances - there's the occasional outright scam, or so-so quality parts (like the ones that inspired me to write this), but you go into it with your eyes open. You take a chance because it's dirt cheap.

And 90% of the time, the parts are just fine.

For anything important, or safety-related, or mains-connected, or anything I build for other than personal use, I won't use yum-cha parts like this. For those, I order good name-brand parts from a reputable supplier (Newark/Element14/RS, DigiKey, etc).

But for hobbyists just having fun, messing around? AliExpress and friends are an absolute godsend. You can now get into hobby electronics for practically nothing, and build stuff and see if you like it.

There's a place for quality parts, and a place for cheap parts. Knowing which is which isn't hard.

Three cheers for cheap components!

There's a lot of excellent #advice going around about how to start getting involved in #DirectAction. I'm also thinking about how to keep the #momentum going once we've started, and #build upon what we're doing.

If you've read a #radical book, you can summarize it in a more #accessible format like a #zine, and share what you learned.

If you've planted a #VictoryGarden, you can share what you've grown with your #local #MutualAid network.

This large format camera is made of Lego – and it takes AMAZING photos via Digital Camera World [Shared]

While the recently released Lego Polaroid camera was cool, it didn't actually take photos. Now, however, we have a camera made out of Lego that produces real photographs – and it's large format, too.

Earlier this month, Alternative Process Photography reposted the result of a passion project made by Cary Norton – a self-described “photographer, tinkerer, and general dweeberist.”

Back in 2009, Norton created the Legotron Mark I, a fully working 4x5 camera constructed almost entirely from Lego bricks. After realizing he wasn’t getting on with the Lego Builder app, he borrowed a ton of Lego bricks from his friend Gregory and set to work building the Legotron.

“What #sacrifices are we willing to make to support our #values? How can we maintain long-term pressure without burning out or reverting to old #shopping habits and items? How do we do this without blaming those who can’t #participate?

Perhaps most importantly, how can we #collectively #build a more self-reliant and #resilient #economy that aligns with our principles and stands strong against external #threats?”
