Last night for the #FolkRidingBikes ride we went classical.
We also had the trike out, so Guy took a stint on the back to conduct us

@paulywill It's to attenuate line-level audio down to mic-level (he says, as if he really knew what he was talking about)
Basically we have two speaker systems we use on our Friday night social #FolkRidingBikes rides, and I have a Rode wireless mic.
We're (ab)using the mic to be an audio relay between bike-at-the-front and bike-at-the-back but the line-out from the speaker is too high for the mic input on the Rode and it was distorting. This lets us dial down the level to give us good tunes
@rasterweb that would be cool. The techno we were listening to towards the end of Friday's #FolkRidingBikes ride was at a tempo conducive to us falling into step with it and getting into a lovely state of flow.
Reminds me a bit of my idle wonderings about music/soundscapes composed for group cycling performance - https://www.mcqn.net/mcfilter/archives/cycling/music_for_mass_bike_rides.html
This week's #FolkRidingBikes group social ride took in the Gaza protest at Lime Street, but also passed by the Mini Roads in Everton Park, so we all had a play on that before heading down to the river, along to the Festival Gardens and back through Prince's Park.
The #FolkRidingBikes "event booking" system is super lightweight. Someone posts a message like "Anyone riding tonight? 6pm at the Bikiosk" in the WhatsApp group and attendees react to that with
It's more of a "don't go without me" than a mandatory requirement; it's a very relaxed affair.
Last night there were five s on my announcement.
As you can (just about ) see from the video, the good weather and promise of beer garden brought out a few more!
Last night the #FolkRidingBikes headed east. We've not done the Croxteth-Kirkby-Fazakerley loop for ages, it's a great mix of countryside and urban riding.
Got escorted through West Derby by a gang of lads on mountain bikes, who were loving it.
@sarahdalgulls yeah, it does look like it would just work (tm) for folk who don't really care about the federation or corporate lock-in side of things, once there's an easier way to use it than self-hosting.
I'd like (though I'd need to persuade everyone else) to move #FolkRidingBikes off WhatsApp, but the chat & lightweight organising (someone posts a start place/time & we use reactions as "signups") are important parts of that community. Not that Wanderer has to fix it, it's *my* use case
Had a look at Wanderer and it's a nice-looking open-source alternative to Komoot/Strava/etc.
Made this test trail to try it out: https://demo.wanderer.to/trail/view/@demo/3b7368b50620482
Would be nice if it had more group-related options. Not quite sure what they'd be, but it feels quite individual-focused (as do Komoot, etc.)
That might just be options for managing signups for scheduled rides/walks. Dunno.
I'm just thinking of groups like #FolkRidingBikes and my dad's weekly walking group.
@jbenjamint the purple lights are a temporary addition (they're bollards from a game we developed to get kids cycling) but the megaphone is a pretty regular addition to play tunes on our #FolkRidingBikes Friday night rides
We often get folk joining in when they encounter us on our #FolkRidingBikes group social rides, but Friday's was the first on a penny farthing!!!
