Keen to listen to Novara Media's new series interviewing climate activists that went to prison for standing up for what they believed in. I marched with Just Stop Oil a few years ago, and whilst I chose not to get arrested, I admired the courage of those who put the cause above themselves. novaramedia.com/category/audio #JustStopOil #ClimateAction

#HR1057: Penalties for #protesters on #InterstateHighways

"Would create steep new penalties for #protesters deemed to be 'deliberately delaying traffic,' 'standing or approaching a motor vehicle,' or 'endangering the safe movement of a motor vehicle' on an interstate highway 'with the intent to obstruct the free, convenient, and normal use of the interstate highway.' The new federal offense would be punishable by up to $10,000 and 15 years in prison—a far harsher penalty than is the case under many states' laws, which generally already criminalize walking or standing on the highway. The bill provides an exception for 'any lawful activity' authorized by federal, state, or local law. However, it could still seemingly cover far more than 'blocking' the interstate, including a #PeacefulProtest on the shoulder of an interstate or a convoy-style, driving protest that slowed traffic. The sponsor of the bill made clear that it was in response to protesters. The same bill was introduced as HR 7349 in 2024.

Status: pending

Introduced 6 Feb 2025.

Issue(s): Traffic Interference

Press release by bill sponsor Rep. #MikeCollins (GA-10):

Luckily this man never tires from refuting those petty arguments fueled by #BigOil.
I wish the BBC would stop bringing them up and start talking about the real problem.

'Just Stop Oil to Stop Direct Action Protests'
So where are we at?
✅ Demand 1: No New Oil and Gas Licences – WON!
🚫 Demand 2: Just Stop Oil by 2030.
💚 We need a Fossil Fuel Treaty.
Carry on emitting today and hope at some future date huge carbon sucking technology will solve the problem. Yet we know carbon is killing today, and global emissions are still rising.
Oil is more valuable than our culture, our heritage, our bodies. More valuable than the beautiful web of life on earth, more valuable than home."

…Also also yesterday, the media reported on #JustStopOil ending their campaign against no new oil because “they’ve won”.

As ever, what they’re doing sounds like it’s going to be more thoughtful than the media’s desire to paint them as fools.

They are “creating a new strategy to tackle current realities”

Just Stop Oil have decided to end direct action-based protests, claiming that as the Govt. is consulting on ending North Sea licenses, JSO's specific demand(s) has been met.

While their protests have been targeted by the press & by the police (courts), many might conclude that its a bit early to claim victory.

However, we might also conclude that JSO *does* need a new strategy to get its message across due to the diminishing returns from direct action?

Feeling a mix of emotions that Just Stop Oil are hanging up their high-vis vests. With the Labour government not issuing new oil and gas licences, it can be argued they have very much achieved their goal. However, on the other hand, it feels like we need climate action more than ever, and hopefully another group will pick up the mantle. theguardian.com/environment/20 #JustStopOil #ClimateAction

We, the climate movement, have been soundly defeated:

"Supporters of the climate group #JustStopOil have announced that, after three years of disruptive protests, they are ending their campaign of civil resistance."

Let's move on to #justcollapse...

I thought I recognised this guy's photo and realised I'd seen him protesting at the #UniversityOfExeter for which he was sentenced to six weeks in prison

I'm still not sure of the effectiveness of these tactics in tackling climate change, but I'm beginning to suspect giving people with a lot of educational and social capital prison experience may end up doing a surprising amount for prison reform

‘The prison system is insanely broken’: a climate activist on his experience in jail

"The entire apparatus is executed with maximum emphasis on punishment and a superficial mention of rehabilitation. Many people resort to smashing the contents of their cells or self-harming as a way to access ... help... It is absolutely no wonder that re-offending rates are so high when those leaving prison are in a worse way than when they came in."

These are brave people, but one of my big problems with #JustStopOil is their claim to have "won its original demand of ‘no new oil and gas’". New licences for exploration were an insane stretch target for O&G lobbyists. Not only would any decent new government have halted those anyway, but JSO's demand was 'halt all future licensing and consents', ie projects like Rosebank web.archive.org/web/2022020122
