Off to orlando for IBM TechXchange. I am speaking tomorrow! So if anyone is there come by and hear me talk about RHEL as a platform for developers! Tomorrow at 11am.

I'll be talking a few features but primarily i'll be showing you live how to use podman desktop for local development and then build a RHEL image mode system from the result. Unfortunately the TSA confiscated my chickens so i won't be able to sacrifice them before my demo. So i'll be working without a net. Pray for me. ;)

What #OpenSource and #SelfHost can do. Had an idea, discussed it here. Seemed to rhyme with people. Booked two domains. Created a landing page with #Jekyll and CI/CD from a #git repo on my #Forgejo instance. Created logo with #Inkscape. Added #letsencrypt certificate. Put it on my VPS (Virtual Private Server) running Red Hat Enterprise Linux, (#RHEL) where it is now served with #Nginx. Git repo mirrored to #Codeberg so all can join. In under 8h.

ARGH! Just discovered that one of my trusty older laptops (Lenovo X220 tablet) can't run #RHEL RHEL10/UBI10/CS10 because its i5-2520 CPU doesn't suipport x86-64-v3 😢
"Fatal glibc error: CPU does not support x86-64-v3" (Ref: docs.redhat.com/en/documentati)

Noting that #Fedora up to 43 still works ok.

EDIT: Also discovered that since glibc 2.33 you can run the dynamical loader to tell you which x86-64 versions are supported by your CPU with the rather odd looking "/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 --help"

Rising from the Ashes: How #AlmaLinux and #RockyLinux Redefined the Post-#CentOS Landscape
For over a decade, CentOS was the backbone of countless servers.
That stability came to an end when #Red Hatpivoted CentOS to a rolling-release model, #CentOSStream. Instead of offering a downstream, binary-compatible version of #RHEL.
This disruption created a vacuum, and the #Linux community quickly stepped up to fill it, and so were born AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux!

Time flies! Another Friday, another `dnf update` and reboot cycle on my 5 Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) servers.

(These are my private servers, that I update every Friday so that I have the weekend to fix things, if needed. So far it was never needed as updates JustWork™)

UPDATE: All machines updated, rebooted and tested. No problems found, weekend can start!

The August 8th, 2025 Jail/Zones Production User Call is up:

youtu.be/p3xiz-901rc

We discussed surprises on the Power architecture, #RHEL to #FreeBSD migration with up to a 40% performance increase, the approval and abilities of the executable jail.conf Review, strategy for automating disaster recovery on FreeBSD hosts, jail ABI backwards compatibility, t-shirt ideas, and more!

"Don't forget to slam those Like and Subscribe buttons."

Did modernize my Ansible role to provision virtual machines on Proxmox via Kickstart in my homelab and added RHEL10 compatibility.

Did it in a peer-programming style with the friendly 🤖 Claude. That worked rather well, especially for the documentation, restructuring and analyzing/solving issues together.

It wasn't without it's problems but the speeup was crazy. It would have easily taken me double the time, if not more, to do this alone.

The Ansible code in the end was absolutely amazing. Robust, idempotent, error tolerant and well structured. With proper guidance, AI can be a great speed multiplier.

New (long and nerdy) blog post: "Be the LetsEncrypt in your homelab with step-ca" at jan.wildeboer.net/2025/07/lets where I explain my homelab setup with its own CA (Certificate Authority) on RHEL 10 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) machines.

Replies to this toot will show up as comments on the blog post.
