@andrewstroehlein IMHO the worst crisis is the #SixthExtinction aka the #BiodiversityCrisis --if we don't do something about that very soon, our entire species is going to go extinct. No more humans on Earth, never again. #OceanAcidification and #ClimateChaos are running wild, pesticides and #PFAS are everywhere, entire biomes are going to collapse if nothing happens very soon. Or rather if things that have been happening for decades don't just stop almost immediately.
#Sudan is part of the whole human drama, and the reason why almost nobody in the richer parts of the world takes any notice is simple: #racism and #antisemitism . #Gaza gives all the antisemites a good excuse to hate the Jews a little more than usual, if you ignore the fact that not all Jews support Netanyahu's extreme right regime, even many Israelis are trying to stop them. OTOH #Hamas gives all the islamophobes a good excuse to hate Muslims more than usual while pretending to be philosemitic. But Sudan? That's just some poor place in Africa, nobody cares.

"Das hier ist die vielleicht wichtigste und doch wohl wenigst beachtete Nachricht des Tages.

Eine weitere planetare Grenze ist überschritten.

Wie üblich ist das Paper eher vorsichtig formuliert. Deshalb hier deutlicher: man muss über komplexe Systeme nur eines wissen: Ohne sie ist alles aus. Für uns." - Prof. Sebastian Seiffert, #ScientistsForFuture @S4F

Sorry folks, I'm reposting... This originally seemed to have gotten appended to someone else's thread on a different topic.

Some nesting and baby shorebirds at Nickerson Beach Park, in Nassau Co., NY. Shorebirds figure prominently among the 3 billion birds that have disappeared in the past 50 years, according to the Audubon Society. This is largely due to habitat loss and degradation, climate change, pollution and introduced predators. To be blunt, Capitalism with its inherent drive for growth is anathema to biodiversity and all life on our planet.

@parents4future Many years ago I worked at this Guanacaste site in Costa Rica with Dan and Winnie and was at some of the magical moth lights there. It’s *heartbreaking* to have a large conserved wildland like this unravelling as it heats up.

With the other causes of biodiversity decline, there have always been places in the world—reserves, national parks, islands—where natural ecosystems could still thrive. The Área de Conservación Guanacaste signals that nowhere will be safe from the centuries of global warming ahead us.

In even the best case scenario, where we finally grow up and turn off the fossil fuel flames, we are still going to lose so many precious things to the heat.

Insects are not only little things that run the world. Each tropical moth is like a fine artwork. Here are some caterpillars from my time in Guanacaste. We might as well be burning down the world's best art galleries.

@advancingu some people do not have the emotional courage to accept the physical truth of the climate crisis and the biological truth of the biodiversity crisis 🤷?

...or rather don't want to read articles like that.

Too depressing. (Which it certainly is, — but it's f*cking reality, — all of us are going to be affected by #ClimateCrisis and #BiodiversityCrisis in our lifetimes, — not to speak of our children and grandchildren... )

RELEASE: Global Forest Loss Shatters Records in 2024, Fueled by Massive Fires

Global #forest loss surged to record highs in 2024, driven by a catastrophic rise in #fires, according to new data from the University of Maryland’s GLAD Lab, made available on World Resources Institute’s Global Forest Watch platform. Loss of tropical primary #forests alone reached 6.7 million hectares — nearly twice as much as in 2023 and an area nearly the size of Panama, at the rate of 18 soccer fields every minute.

For the first time on our record, #fires — not #agriculture — were the leading cause of tropical #PrimaryForest loss, accounting for nearly 50% of all destruction. This marks a dramatic shift from recent years, when fires averaged just 20%. Meanwhile, tropical primary forest loss driven by other causes also jumped by 14%, the sharpest increase since 2016.

As much as I love woodland creation, my real passion for years has been ancient woodland restoration. My charity is hoping to acquire another 11 acres of ancient replanted woodland (PAWS) directly next to an existing bit of land we own, so I ask you: help us sponsor a few square meters, and I’ll get the job done. #AncientWoodland #ancientwoodlandrestoration #BiodiversityCrisis #ClimateAction shop.protect.earth/products/an

An upset Climeworks donor is conplaining they’ve given ~$2,000 to them, and now none of their ~3 tonnes have been sequestered, in fact it’s only funded more emissions.

For $2,000 you could sponsor ~750 trees, with a survival rate of 80% guaranteed. Most of them will do a tonne eventually, and more importantly it’s not just helping #ClimateAction but #BiodiversityCrisis #FloodMitigation #FoodSecurity and it’s a nice place to wander about, maybe with a dog. shop.protect.earth/
