Games and History Take Centre Stage at Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Curious Festival
Unreal Pasts, Playful Presents: The growing cultural and academic significance of videogames will be highlighted this September, as the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) hosts a fascinating panel discussion as part of its annual Curious festival of knowledge.
The event, titled Unreal pasts, playful presents: history and fantasy in games and media, will take place on Wednesday, 10 September 2025, both in-person at the RSE’s historic headquarters in Edinburgh and online.
The panel will delve into how digital games offer immersive, emotional experiences of historical events, while often blurring the boundaries between real and “unreal” histories by incorporating fantasy and sci-fi elements. The discussion, a collaboration between the Historical Games Network and the Imperial War Museums Institute, will explore how games invite us to play with the past and shape how history is represented and reimagined.
Of particular interest to the Scottish games community is the participation of Dr. Tim Peacock, Senior Lecturer in History & War Studies and the Director/co-founder of the University of Glasgow’s Games and Gaming Lab. Dr. Peacock is a key partner in the Scottish Games Network’s recently announced Hello World! student startup summit, collaborating with SGN and the Scottish Games Education Network to help nurture the next generation of founders.
He will be joined by an expert panel including Dr. Esther Wright, founder of the Historical Games Network; public historian Dr. Chris Kempshall; Fruzsina Pittner, a UI Artist at Scopely; and Mimi Markham, a PhD Researcher from the University of Glasgow.
This event is a fantastic opportunity for developers, writers, artists, and students to gain a deeper perspective on how our medium interacts with history and culture, and to hear from leading thinkers at the intersection of academia and game development.
