#Trump is demanding to attach conditions to congressionally approved grants for #RadioFreeEurope / #RadioLiberty before releasing the money, despite a court order blocking it from terminating the funds. Acc/to court filings, Trump wants to be able to unilaterally pause funds for the federally funded broadcaster & shut down parts of its programming, among other moves that lawyers for #RFE say are forbidden by #Congress to ensure journalistic integrity.

Donald Trump’s attempts to defund US Russian-language #counterpropaganda efforts in Ukraine, Eastern Europe, Belarus, Central Asia and Russia through #RadioFreeEurope / #RadioLiberty failed, so what they did is they actually terminated contracts with satellite companies who transmit those signals.

If you were trying to help Russia win, this would be it. #Propaganda is by far their strongest suite. In fact perhaps the only thing they are best in the world at. #NAFO

Radio Free Europe says Washington shut off its Russian broadcast despite restraining order.

Washington has switched off a satellite transmitting the US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty into Russia.

Although the station won a temporary restraining order against US President Donald Trump's funding freeze, it is still waiting to receive the $77 million it needs to keep running until October.

The head of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty said on April 3 that the US government had switched off a satellite that transmitted its Russian-language programme into #Russia .
Prague-based RFE/RL, founded during the Cold War to counter Soviet propaganda and funded by the US, has been at odds with the new administration of US President Donald #Trump , which decided mid-March to freeze its funding, amid a drive to slash the size of the federal government.

A #WhiteHouse plot to axe international broadcasters #RadioFreeEurope / #RadioLiberty has been foiled after presidential advisor #KariLake was forced to rescind a letter cancelling the network’s grants.

It comes just a day after a judge temporarily halted an attempt by the #Trump administration to shut down the station, claiming it would “violate the #Constitution and federal laws.”

Radio Free Europe was for decades symbol of fight against totalitarian regimes in Easter Europe and later also in other parts of the world.

(For brief time I worked for Radio Farda and helped with broadcasting free and balanced news to Iran. Good times.)

Since fascist US governement wants to end this organisation, it should be up to EU to take the lead and start with something like Radio Free America - to repay the debt of cold war.

#RadioFreeEurope / #RadioLiberty sued the #Trump admin on Tues to try to block it from terminating all federal funds for the US-backed broadcaster.

In a federal lawsuit, the network argues that the #USAGM has violated the #Constitution & federal laws by withholding money #Congress expressly allocated for the broadcaster. USAGM disburses funds to US-backed international networks, including RFE/RL, that serve foreign lands w/o a free or robust press.

In der #DDR hat man uns immer gesagt, dass #RadioFreeEurope schlimme Propaganda sei. Nun haben die Menschen, die immer von #freeSpeech reden, die Radiosender weltweit geschlossen.

Es ist irre. Ich wünsche mir manchmal, ganz kurz in einer Parallelwelten-DDR zu sein, die die Wende nicht erlebt hat und zu sehen, welche öffentlichen Verlautbarungen es zu Themen wie #Trump gibt.

Ganz kurz nur, aber interessant wäre es schon.

Wenn mir einer vor 40 Jahren erzählt hätte, dass die USA die Nato auflöst, die Mediennetze abschafft, versucht internationalen Handel zu beenden, ich hätte es nicht geglaubt.

Wenn mir einer vor 30 Jahren erzählt hätte, dass die USA mal kritische Student*innen ausweist, dass Student*innen nach Kanada fliehen, ich hätte es nicht geglaubt.
